i will be doing the 4.7 gear upgrade to my t case and while i have it apart i want to put in marlins rebuild kit. but i don't know if the needle bearings are worth an extra $100

It depends on the current condition of your needle bearings.

Unless it's broken you don't need to rebuild the case. I just pulled apart an 85 forward shift and an 88 top shift to install my 4.7s and get ready for my duals and both cases looked brand new inside. I was going to rebuild the cases but after seeing the insides I can save the money for other things (Longfield output).

My newly built dual case failed a few months ago and the needle bearings in the fwd transfer case that the low speed gear rides on were the initial point of failure.  The fwd case was the stock one out of the 89 4Runner and the rear was a MC 4.70 unit.  It cost me more than $100 to get  back on the road.

If you're going into something for a rebuild, I always like to remove all doubt of future failures when possible.

 :twocents:
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

I wouldn't worry about them. Inspect them thoroughly before reassembling the case. Transfer cases are low mileage in the first place.
