from showroom to the trail???? need opinons
« on: Sep 12, 2012, 09:06:53 PM »
im gonna see how this thread takes off, been thinkin about this a while. assume u have a bone stock 81-95 pre  tacoma (just for example) and u want to eventually make it a extremly capable 4x4 rig and limited amount of money and the usual 5 year build to eventually finish a very capable rig doing 1 mod to it only every 6 months or so. chime in to change my opinion or add something..........
1. air compressor so u can air up your bone stock tires and get more traction with those open differntials
2. rear locker
3. rock sliders because the doors need to still your doors to open and seal up good
4.winch because it makes u feel safe
5. bigger tires because u realize you need more axle clearance as u find bigger rocks
6. ring and pinion because u now realize its guttless with a 4.10 ring and pinion and 33s-35 inch tires.
But then do u do a locker and leave the ring and pinion alone and get into twice or a 3rd time because u now realize your changing the ifs gear ratio only to scrap that when its sased???? lets not go there right now.
7. transfer case gears either duals or just single 4:7s your clutch will love u and more torque is reallly nice in the rock crawling world
8.sas because the ifs is just now boring
9. front locker because open just dosent cut it
10. longfields/marjoints because now your popping shafts on the trail
EDIT THIS, ADD THINGS TELL ME YOUR OPINION. I wish i knew all this before i built my truck in so many wrong stages and made SEVERAL  mistakes  :hammerhead:

Can't forget the co2 tank because the compressor takes so long to fill the bigger tires

I agree first truck i did all these oh so wrong this time i saved up and just did one big lump sum build made things nice still took 5 months though lol.

I agree with co2 tank i would suggest that over a compressor highly these days

I would start by adding a welded rear or rear locker and sliders.

I'd do bumpers and rock sliders first. You can get into pretty deep sh*t in a stock toy if you're a good driver and you'd hate to hurt the body when it wasn't necessary.

I would put the winch further down the list, go wheeling with a friend or a group, just my  :twocents:

I agree, I can only think of a couple times I got in enough trouble to need a winch. Both of those were due to being a little too aggressive and exceeding my trucks capabilities. That being said always take into account your trucks capabilities and your talent for driving offroad, if you are just getting started don't get in over your head and run out of talent and even if you have the talent keep your truck within its ability to travel down the trail unassisted. Personally I have taken some of my trucks where others feared they'd be dragging me down the trail but my years of experience on the trails in question belayed their fears and I would have no issues. I've taken some mostly stock vehicles places some would not and done fine but I do not take any risks when doing this, take the best lines and stay out of the optional routes. You don't need to follow that buggy up those rocks when there is a go around. Do watch and learn from it but don't try it until you and your truck is ready to tackle it.

Yep, agreed.  And my DD that still gets wheeled has a front locker, and open rear.  Reason being, I wanted a true open for the street, no popping from a quick locker, and the engine weight really helps to utilize full front traction.  So...

1.  Armor- Bumpers, sliders, skid plates
2.  Chunky 31" tires
3.  Front locker (if the rig is already solid front axle, otherwise, rear locker)
4.  Crawl box, cause you can have a lot more fun with the control of the low low range

Of course this is all assuming the truck in itself is good to go, engine, brakes, steering being the most important to a great day on the trail

I still think a front locker is more important than the rear. I have a lock right in the front of my rig and te front end pulls. I only use the rear locker maybe once or twice

Based on your time frame, and starting condition, I would build it in this order
1. air compressor/recovery gear/tow hooks front and rear.
3. rock sliders, solid front/rear bumpers
7. either dual cases or single 4:7s, you can always find traction by stacking rocks, being able go as slow as possible is the best way of keeping your sheet metal dent free.  Will require doing drivelines twice, but by the time you SAS it, the drivelines will likely need to be rebuilt anyways
5. lift larger tires, 33's or 35's
6. re-gear w/4.88's or 5.29's, depending on what tire you upgraded to, look for used diffs with/w/o lockers, you can usually find them for $2-500
2. rear locker if not found w/gears, bench labor is cheap
4.winch, could also be done earlier depending on what deals you find
8.sas if/when you find it is time to risk damaging your show room clean rig on the trails you are now wanting to run, upgrade to 35's if still on 33's
10. longfields/marjoints should be done at the same time as the SAS, the oem ones are now 27yrs old, 32 by the your time frame
9. front locker
'90 black X-cab mod'd 3.0, 33's/4.88's, rear ARB, custom bumpers, sliders, safari rack, etc.
'91 Blue X-cab 22re, 35's/5.29's,Truetrac front, ARB rear, dual cases, and custom Safari flatbed, bumper, interior.

I would do it in these stages if your doing stages, im just saving up and stock piling parts why i dd my rig around.

1. bumpers,sliders,cage
2. weld rear end up add a winch
3. sas because you realize ifs sucks for what you do and dual cases at the same time if your terrain calls for it( no need to change shafts 2 times.
4. save for awhile after spending all your money on the previous stuff.
5. gears and tires do it at the same time because you know going bigger means gears will need to be changed now, and since you only welded the rear up no money was spent in buying a locker do so now if you must.
6. longs and hub gears
7. stand back and look at your mean looking yota.

Can't forget the co2 tank because the compressor takes so long to fill the bigger tires
Sorry, but with a 210 and a holding tank it takes me about one min. to fill my 36's from 5 psi to 25 psi.

Id say....
Sliders, bumpers
4.7 t-case
front locker (keep IFS if you have it)
The stock CV's will hold up as along as you don't hop the piss out of them
.... Then see if you want to take the plunge
Dual cases, 35s+, solid axle

Yeah, the more I think about it, lockers have to be within the top 3.  Sliders are key for hi-lifting and stacking rocks, and a 4.7 case.  Shoot, now I want to do a light build on my stock 86 4runner.  Problem is, once you start, it's hard to stop!

this is what i am thinking
i want to start another 1st gen runner

1st. Replace the weak engine with 3rz or 3.4L
I still have lots of homework to decide which one to go with. I hated my last 22r and 22re for a daily driver so a strong engine is very important to me and its a big budget item. I want to get it out the way right off the batt

2nd. Body fab and protection.
I want to chop all the fenders, rear quarters and swap the runner tailgate for a pu tail gate then get it painted. I am tired of driving ugly beaters so now I want my dd to look nice no matter what stage it is in. add the body protection to keep it nice

3rd. Get tcase set up with gears, duals and belly skids

4th. start working on my axles. Not the axles on the rig. I want to build a taco V6 rear and not sure for the front either a stretched mini or fj80 with hellfire fab knuckles. axles are where all the money gos, tax returns, extra cash, sell a kidney, sell blood, sperm bank, credit, ie. solid axles eat money
a. maybe throw lockers in the stock axles just to be able to have a little fun and be able to make it out on some trails for camping and fun.

5th. Lift and steering. its the easy and fun part
got another 85 runner. build coming soon!!
