Swamp Lk, Red Mt trails later this week
« on: Jul 22, 2013, 06:15:08 PM »
heading to the Shaver area probably Thus and out Sun to run Swamp and most of the Red Mt trails
Green '00 Taco with a few mods...see you there.  anyone else heading up?

tentative game plan:
Thus.  to Swamp, north end, camp @ top of first ridge by the picnic table, fish Hatch Lk
Fri,  head down to the valley below and stop somewhere along the trail and hike to Betty and Virgina Lks...never been there.
Head out of Swamp and over to Sand Flat...depending on time head in and camp @ Mirror
Sat.  out from Mirror to Coyote
Sun.  home

Anyone checked out Virgina and Betty across the valley from the mine?

I'm going into Swamp Friday with a bunch of jeeps, some are going on Thursday. 15 - 20 rigs I'm guessing.  Coming in backwards from the Brewer side.

Didn't know you were here too.  I posted a pic of your rear diff armor in some ones thread about drainplug damage.

Do you take pictures?  Post some of your trip if so.  Some(me) may never see your area.

Anyone know how the current wildfire is affecting the swamp lake / red lake trails? Proximity? The smoke looks pretty nasty.
The mountains are calling and I must go.

Looks like we are staying at Grouse not Swamp. Long day going in from the north and an easy day coming out.

Info

This is what the smoke looked like at Nellie Lake a couple of days ago.

Prather, this morning, the smoke is prevalent.

If you plan on coming up to recreate, then prepare for poor breathing conditions.

If you have respiratory problems then you might want to postpone any trips in the area.

There have been about 16 fires in the past week (most of them are contained) The Aspen fire close to 3,000 acres is still going. There is smoke everywhere and wind, temperature etc. effect it, as well.

Negative Ghost Rider.................................Stump Springs Road is closed, not Kaiser Pass Road. Call Prather Ranger Station at 855-5360.

yea, Stump Springs Rd, not Kaiser.  however, the FS has been trying to discourage people from going to kaiser pass and beyond...from what I was told this last weekend by several wheelers who had stopped at the Prather station.

Ran Swamp, West, Strawberry, Red/Coyote and Mirror from Thus-Sun.  had a great time and met a bunch of great wheelers!

Trails were all in good shape...very little trash to pick up!  Swamp and Strawberry were a little rougher than the last time I was there...'09 and '06 respectively.
Minor carnage @ Swamp Lk Thus...had to put in the spare rear DL due to driver error and got a tad too close to a tree with the Dr side cab that will 'pop' out...eventually. :p

bad part:  couple of kids, both with female passengers in bright orange rigs...one '90s Yota with a V8 and a Chebby were bombing through trails and Sand Flat Fri and Sat.  The Chev was parked, broke (rear diff, two tires) a couple hundred yards past Coyote's gatekeeper.  no plates on the truck so couldn't report them.  Group coming out of Coyote (early Yota, couple of Jeeps) told me they picked up a bunch of trash left by these 'kids' @ or near Coyote

I walked over to Betty Lk along the Swamp Lk trail to see if it had fish...nope, too shallow not to freeze solid.  Next time I'll check out Virginia.
Was too tired to fish Swamp and had repairs to do Fri. morning so...next time.  The one group there had some luck but not much.
I fished Strawberry on Sat. for a while but the huge group that was in there had most of the fish diving for cover :p
Sadly, fishing @ Mirror is no longer what it used to be...all plants that I and others caught.  It seems the beautiful natives that used to be there are gone.
Didn't fish Red or Coyote this time, just went in/out.

Not much in the way of mosquitoes but they were there if you didn't have repellant on.

My neck and shoulders are killing me :p
back to work tomorrow.

Funny, the woman I talked to at Prather Ranger Station told me the road is open and she was frustrated that anyone would say otherwise.

Just got back from rescuing another rig at swamp.  Looks like the fire is right above hunting lake and growing.

smoke in the Red Mt area wasn't nearly as bad as it was on Fri evening...winds keep changing so some areas are clear and others suck.

I was with the naxja guys, it was also 4X4Him, Bakersfield Trailblazers and Infectious Offroad. (20 rigs) at Grouse Lake. It was weird being the only Toy, but all of them were super cool.

Me and two other rigs went in from the north side on sunday, ran into a giant traffic jam of about 15 toyotas at v-rock so we ate lunch and turned around. Looks like v-rock is no longer a "V"!:(

See you at the Timberline!

The gut who lost the spare was super happy about getting it back. That was the second tire the group lost. The one you found was from a group who wheeled it in the dark Friday night. They arrived after 10:00 that night
