Winch cables to the starter???????
« on: Sep 10, 2011, 12:40:15 PM »
I was wondering what you guys think. I have a warn 9.5ti winch mounted in the front of my truggy. I recently mounted 2 optima batteries in the rear of my truck. I was wondering if i can just run my winch cables like this. Positive to the starter and negative to the frame, instead of running 2 cables all the way to the rear of my truck. The warn manual says under full load the winch can pull up to 300amps. But i don't think it would damage the starter because the starter isn't cranking over. Or am i over thinking this and should i just run the lines to the back. What do you guys think??

Thats not how it works

I have mine setup on my 22re like that and it works just fine. had it setup like that also on an older truck of mine for about 4 years and never had a problem on that truck either.

it's not going through any kind of relay, more or less power hits the starter then follows through to the winch.

Have you ever grounded out the pos end of a starter with a wrench? It arcs, meaning there is constant power goin to it. There isnt a switch that turns the power on and off when the starter is engaged.

I dont see any reason that you couldnt connect it there. It would definitly save you the money to run the cable to your new batt location. Its at least worth a try

Don't see it hurting anything, but personally I would run it direct to the batteries so as not to find out that it does the hard way.

I was thinkin the same thing. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything, I just havnt seen it done before. Though I'm sure it would work
