Piston and bearings ID
« on: Mar 30, 2011, 04:36:26 PM »
I have a couple of questions guys.
83' yota pu with 22R.
Could you enlighten me on the numbering system on the stock pistons. Mine have the following stamped on top: 1  3 /  2   4 /  1   3 / 1   4 ,
Also I can find no size marked on the main bearings or rod bearings, does this mean they are standard?  I can find no info in my Haynes on either question.
Thank you

Best bet would be to mic the crank and the bores to be sure. Sorry I can't help with the numbers.

How is that going to tell you if the crank has been turned and undersize bearings are being used? When you turn a crank, the tolerances for the bearings are supposed to be set the same as stock.

Bore mic's out to standard , what I don't understand is the marking on top of the pistons and the lack of any markings on the bearings. I'll plast-gauge the rods and mic the crank today.
Most engines I've rebuilt have had bearings marked 'std', '.020', etc. and the same for the pistons. Toyota has a series of two numbers 90 degrees apart on each piston top and they don't seem to make much sense, well to me anyway. They don't even seem to indicate which piston is one, two, etc.
Piston #1    1  3
"   "    #2    2  4
"   "    #3    1  3
"   "    #4    1  4
Thank you for the replies and advice.

That is different then I have always used it. The only thing I have ever used it for was the make sure the clearence between the crank and the bearing was the right tolarence according to the instructions that came with the bearings or the FSM. You just taught me a new use for it that I did not know and I have been building engines for over fifty years. The way I have always found if the bearings were oversized was to look on the back.
