4.7 low speed gear
« on: Dec 30, 2010, 10:15:47 PM »
I am in the process of installing Marlin's 4.7 gear set and I have just pressed the first bearing back onto the output shaft.  I pressed it on with a 12ton press until it stopped moving, but there still seems to be a tiny gap between the low speed gear and the main gear on the end of the output shaft.  I'm talking 0.012".  This concerns me, as I can wiggle the low speed gear ever so slightly, but I press the bearing on until I started having to put some real elbow grease into the press and I'm scared to press any harder.  And yes I was using a pipe with an ID only slightly larger than ID of the bearing so as to make sure that I'm pressing on the inner bearing race.  Is this normal?  Should I be worried?  Anyone know what the tolerance is?    :dunno:

Thanks,

Allen

I'm not exactly sure what ur talking about, but is there another gear or anything else that goes on after the bearing? this would hold it in place.
-Lockball and lock washer between it?
-May just be one of the bearings that use a large snap clip to keep them in place.
-Do you mean the bearing on the front out put shaft (mates with the tranny?) these are held in by the transmission
-Or do you mean the front out out shaft for the front driveline?
I built my 4.7 TG case a few months back

Well, I always say use a picture, problem is, I'm not good at art, but here's a paint drawing of what I am talking about.  Sorry for the crudeness.

I can move the low speed gear so that the 0.012" gap is between the thrust washer and the bearing as well.

I dont know for a fact but I would think that as long as its down far enough for you to get the dentent ball into the hole on the shaft and fit the washer over it then it should be fine. However, I think on mine I was able to press it all the way on....I only used a bench vise flipped upside down and a hammer though since I dont have a press so sounds like yours is going on a lot tighter than mine did for some reason. I have 3 runs on mine so far with no problems.

I say run it, mine was a tight squeeze, but made it on without having to crank on the press. probably just a tolerance issue
