Just picked up a bone stock 88 4runner. 3.0 V-6, 5spd, 4wd, SR5, Sun roof, nice truck. The previous owner said he thought it blew a head gasket? The engine bars over no problem. The rest of the truck is in excellent condition. For the price that I paid for it I can do head gaskets.

I plan on turning it into a daily driver, and family fun rig. I'll swap the 22rte into, plus the solid axle from my 82 and have some fun with it.

I would research your engine swap... going from 6 to 4 cyl has a lot of wiring issues that are not fun.. might save you a ton of work to just stick with the 3.0 especially if you are doing the head gaskets like you already mentioned.. plus I don't think you will gain much with a 22rte.. (my opinion)
