Oregon Vehicle registration questions
« on: Sep 07, 2010, 08:56:03 PM »
ok- i bought a motorhome in washington state-i.e.- it has washington plates and title

it failed smog, miserably, badly, really badly

oregon requires a deq slip for registration as i underdtand it

so- i do not want to dump massive dollars into passing smog, if its a simple fix, ok, but it likely is not

so how do i A- get the coach in my name,
and B- use it legaly  here and there

could i register it in a non smog required location? most of oregon is non smog....

ideas are welcome, thanks

you would not believe how many vehicles i have registered at my house lol...  find a friend that doesnt have to pass smog register it at his place... watch your tags, and just go to the local dmv to get the new ones when you need em (if they question your address tell em its a second residence)

I usually just remail out my buddies registration renewals, but they know its not up to me lol

I do the same. My car and truck are regi'd in the rogue valley. They still have smog but rules down there are 20 years and newer instead of '75 and newer (or whatever it is up here).

I would have thought you lived right outside the line, i guess your still in portland.

found the info i was looking for:
from: http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/vehicle/emissions.shtml
Quote
Emissions testing is required as follows:
In the Portland area, 1975 and newer model years must be tested (view detailed information).
In the Medford (Rogue Valley) area, vehicles 20 model years old and newer must be tested (view detailed information).
In these areas, cars, trucks, vans, motor homes and buses powered by gasoline, alternative fuels (such as propane), and hybrids must be tested.
In these areas, diesel-powered vehicles with a manufacturer's gross weight rating of 8,500 pounds or less must be tested.

Also i have been told that its possible to get around DEQ. i don't know how rumor this is and how real. But something along the lines of claiming a hardship of fixing the problem. The problem being way more expensive than the vehicle itself. I feel like you can get it registered (not trip permit) but i couldn't find more state info about it.

As for me, My car and truck are just registered at my fathers house. vehicle mail gets sent there like dmv stuff and i get a call from the folks.

I wish i could help but im smack dab in the middle of town. This is one thing i will take into allot of consideration when, if, someday, somehow i get to purchase a house/land.

My overall thought is how bad could the smog be? Whats the motor? Maybe you just need some new plugs and an 02? Also if the motorhome isn't passing smog then it isn't running correctly. This could be unattractive, and i don't mean in a hippy environmentalist way, but a $$ MPG way. Just a thought. As always, if you need a hand let me know. Works slow and i need something to do!

P.S.  :worthless:
Lets see the new toyota

limit on hydrocarbons is 220ppm, i ran 1850ppm   :shocking:

you should be able to do it at your dmv using his address.... but i think you will have to have the OSP inspect the vehicle first (look at the vin compared to title) because its an out of state rig.... least thats what i had to do when i bought a rig in Wyoming and had it licensed in Oregon.. (while i lived in Wyoming)

And as far as they know, Dan has a beach house where he keeps the motorhome.

jim- this is the 88th vehicle i have purchased for whatever reason, either personal use, or to turn

all of them have been legal, paid my dues, and smogged every one, even two race cars

im not screwing the system in any way shape or form. this vihicle has been owned in a non smog area for 25 years, and used. like i said- i will continue to try and smog it as money permits, but in the mean time, i refuse to allow a vehicle to sit while i could be enjoying it

More than likely the title will come to my address.  And if it does, I will drop it off at your house the next time I head out to Portland.  The family and I always do most of out shopping right by your place anyway.  So, it's no big deal.  There might be cheese dropped off too!!   :eyebrow:
