Pinion seal
« on: Sep 10, 2010, 02:49:04 PM »
I have a 83 4x4 pickup, the pinion seal started leaking today and i need to take this on a 1k round trip next weekend, I was wondering what needs to be done to put the new seal in. Labor times are 2hrs, but i cant see why it takes that long, i called a shop they said itll be 115$ to do the seal so it cant be that in depth to do, i also bough the seal and by the looks of it you just pull the driveshaft then pull the seal out , WTF am i missing ? thanks guys!!!

I had the same thing. Don't quote me as i am no expert, but i did as you said and then just put the new one in. Just make sure you put it in straight as i learned you can screw that up.

I'm not the expert (**hint hint** ZUK), but I believe that when you remove the flange to get to the seal, you could lose your PPL (Pinion Pre Load).  I think to avoid this, you need to make sure that the flange nut gets returned back to the exact same position as before you started.  Any others care to chime in on this thought?  :dunno:

Yep, it's a super simple job. Just make sure that you mark the placement of the pinion nut before you take it off. Once it's broken free, just count how many rotations it took to remove. Pull the old seal out, carefully install the new, and reinstall the pinion nut to the original place. I did mine that way a few thousand miles ago and no problems.
