HD pinion seal...?
« on: Mar 07, 2009, 01:09:34 PM »
i just replaced my stock pinion seal for the new marlin crawler hd seal on my 1988 4x4 pu...after putting everything back together i noticed that the rubber seal on the outside of pinion seal wasn't touching the backside of the u joint flange...its about a 1/8 gap between seal and flange...is this normal or did i forget to do something when taking out the original seal...?

Sounds like you're missing the dust cover.

To my knowledge the HD seal does not replace the dust cover.

In reference to All_Set, please see:

its about a 1/8 gap between seal and flange...
Could you take a picture of this gap maybe? Are you referring to a gap between the seal surface and the seal itself?

Grear, it should not touch.

I designed the external rubber lip to cut down on the amount of dirt that comes in contact with the outer lip of the seal.

If it was to make metal contact, it would give a false pinion preload measurment.
