16.5 wheel bead
« on: Aug 22, 2012, 11:16:03 AM »
My dads truck currently has 16.5x9.75 wheels on it along with 37" military take-offs. I know 16.5s don't have the seat on the ramp for the tire to hold on to, so I need figure out if i need to get beadlocks or weld a smooth bar to the inside of the wheel to help keep the tire on.

My first question, if I get a DIY beadlock kit, will tire still come off the inside edge of the wheel? Will I need double bead locks or is just locking the outside edge enough?

Second question, I have read about guys welding a piece of 3/16 smooth bar on the inside of the wheel on both the outer and inner bead areas of the wheel. This is supposed to give the tire something the hold it in place when aired down. I also read that it hold the tire on so good that once the tire is mounted and popped up and over the smooth bar, the only way to get the tire back off is to cut it off. Not a big deal, considering if the tire ever needed to be removed it would be to replace it. Anyone have any experience with welding the smooth bar on and how well it works?

Any info would be appreciated.

the bar works good i have a set of aluminum 15's with a bar welded on both sides and its very rare to blow a bead. You dont have to cut the tire off the rim but it does take alot of force. We usually break the beads using a tractor and pressing the bucket down on the tire lol. If you do the DIY lock you will still need to do somthing about the inner bead, If i remember right there is a fairly decent thread on pirate about this.

I found this on diy4s website. This what I plan on doing. How hard is it to get the tire on the wheel once this is on it?

Ok. I'm pretty set on welding the smooth bar. I'll post up pics as I get them done.

Found this on pirate too. Looks like it should work good. Hopefully I'll get started on it this afternoon.

I just welded 3/16 smooth bar on the inside of a spare 16.5 I had. Just wondering what psi the bead will set on. I got to about 30 psi before I stopped. It never popped over.

I am not an expert Edwin, but maybe some soapy water will help it pop over?

I tried soap and water, wd40, and even motor oil. Can't get it to pop on. I'm going to try a higher psi and get a longer hose do I can sit a ways back incase the tire blows and see what happens. It's getting a bit frustrating.

Try emptying the tire completely and putting a ratchet strap around the whole tire then blow it up, should case your pressure with less psi.

Starter fluid is how I'm getting it popped to the bead, then I put an air hose on it and start to fill. I'm not having any problems getting the tire to press up against the wheel, just popping over the bead

If you can find some, try to get some tire soap. Totally different then regular soap.

Try grinding the back side and top of the bar down making it a ramp sort of. Also as stated real tire soap and a wide ratchet strap, the kind they use for heavy loads not the motorcycle straps.

I tried using a 3 inch rachet strap I use for stealing down my rig on the trailer. It didn't work. Do you think tore soap will work better than wd40 or motor oil?

I also ground the weld down a bit on the inside to make a ramp, it didn't work either. I think I might try grinding the 3/16 smooth bar down a bit. Starting to think 3/16 might be a bit much. I read on a different post on pirate that guys even have a hard time setting the bead when using 1/8. I'll work on it some more tomorrow after work.

I've had to take passenger car tires up to 80psi to get them to seat a couple of times.  Boy, when they pop you know it!!  Low profile tires seemed to be the worst!!!

The Cheetah bead blaster's are fun too!!  Little safer than lighter fluid.  I want one of these, and change out the end and launch potatoes!!

LOl. My neighbor has one at work he was going to bring home tomorrow if we couldn't get it. I thInk for the other 4 tires that's what I'll use. That much starting fluid gets a bit sketchy
