22re oil recommendation
« on: Jun 01, 2010, 04:19:49 PM »
Hey guys-
I wanted to see/get recommendations on what kind of oil you run in your 22re during the summer. I live in northern California so the temp. in the summer ranges from 85-100+. I've read the manuals and what not, but I still want to see what you all recommend or are running.
Thanks

year round. You could go a bit lighter but I've found this to be a happy medium.

How many miles on the engine?

I have 170,000 and am currently using 15w40 diesel oil (chevron , think it's called delo) for the zinc additives......

If you have a high mileage engine go with a non-synthetic high mileage motor oil, it does work. You don't need any other additives when you use it and it provides the same protection from leaky seals. I run Castrol 10w/30

Pretty much will run on anything you wanna put in from 5/30 to 20/50.

In my past 3 yotas I've ran castrol gtx high mileage 10/30. My current one I'm running Moblie one 20/50 trying it out but going to switch back... I'v been running napa's gold oil filters which help cut down on the start up rattle of the chain.

What do you all run for filters?

I run Mobil One 10/40 with the BIG K&N filter, I forget the number.  :twocents:  Always had good luck with it.

I run 10w30 mobile 1 with the large toyota filter. i used to order the HUGE fj40 ones but a recently scored an oil cooler off of a turbo truck so i use the smaller one. i might even use the regular filter specd for the engine from toyota

It sucks though because the oil filter with the valve for keeping oil pressure to keep the chain start up rattle away is discontinued. Or thats what I've been told by my local stealer-ship.

The very common Purolator L30001  (what was once called PUR1A).

Also use same filter on my 64 Plymouth Valiant.

I run the Delo 400 30 wt.  It usually doesn't get that hot here on the Oregon Coast for me to run anything else.  And I feel that oil for diesels (20W-50) is too thick and has all the wrong properties for a gas motor.  I stick with 30wt, since I change my oil every 2500 miles, and then reuse the old oil for my my chainsaw for bar oil.  And I run Carquest filters.  They got the anti-siphon valve.  And get the large filter, which for some reason is listed as a 85 4runner.  For some reason that is the only year that they list a larger filter for any 22r/re.  All others listed for a smaller one.

Currently running 20/50 redline synthetic in the 80 with a napa gold (wix) 1068, the larger one that's for a 302 I believe.

Run 10/40 or 10/30 valvoline/mobil in the 91 all year long with the same 1068 filter.

Castrol 20/50 is NOT a diesel oil its designed for high mileage small engines such as the 22R, Chevy 2.5L  etc

Actually  if I'm not mistaken isnt all Delo 400 diesel oil :dunno:  I know Delo 15/40 is what my boss always ran in a couple of my big rigs i drove.  the only other oil was Rotella 15/40

the 15/40 is almost ALWAYS a diesel oil and has additives to clean the soot out of diesels

I run cheap 10/30 and an oil conditioner like Lucas(start-up rattle is gone).  But this engine has 200K on it.  Runs very well for its age.  The big deal is to change oil often, since the engine is not as well sealed or as tight on its tolerances as modern designs.  A *lot* of grime gets sucked into it.  Even at 3K miles, the oil is nearly twice as dirty as my dad's 10 year old Buick.
