Wheel bearing preload
« on: Sep 08, 2010, 07:54:52 AM »
Hey guys, I just set up my wheel bearings. Off the top of my head I want to say 16# preload. IIRC this is higher than the factory spec. This is the first time I have done it right with a 54mm socket and a pull scale. I was surprised that the old side was so tight but it lasted a LONG time so I put the new ones back the same (16# IIRC). I am running 37x14 toyos.

Just wondering do you guys go more preload for larger tires?

The factory spec is all fine and dandy but I have learned to do it a little diff with great success.  I tighten the 1st 54mm nut very hard then back it off a 1/4 turn.  If they are new bearings then this is even more important since the bearing will settle and loosen up.  Just drive it a little then recheck the load.
