wheel bearing preload
« on: Aug 25, 2010, 07:30:35 AM »
Hey guys, I just needed some clarification on wheel bearing preload. Off marlins site I got "The FSM calls for 6-8 lbs of preload for you wheel bearings and the outer spindle nut being torqued down to 34 ft-lbs." That makes sense to me, but the FSM also called out for measuring seal drag or something? I didnt get that part, do any of you know what thats all about?

Also since I have the scale I was gonna check my preload on my trunion bearings. But come to think of it, it is what it is if I dont have any shims right?

I have never worried about that, I just follow the rest of what the FSM says. I have never, in fifteen years had a WB problems. I also put a light coat of WB grease on that seal.

The FSM calls for 6.6-13.2 start pull pounds. With wider/taller tires I go to the upper end of that spec. If it is to loose/tight you have to remove the steering arms and add or subtract shims. Install the arms and torque to spec.(71 ftlb unless you are running ARP studs then torque to 100-110 ft lbs) and test again.

Here is a link to an 85 FSM on rebuliding the front axle.
