Topic: 22R Running Hot at SLOW speeds

I have a 22r that's been running hot lately as soon as i start driving slow(low range). When I'm on the highway the motor runs cool. My fan is working when i lift up the hood. Could this be a sign of a bad thermostat? What else could it be? (The only thing I've changed recently was removing the fan shroud)

Could also be a plugged radiator, exagerated by the shroud being off, but I haven't run a shroud in years.

At highway speeds ram air is enough to cool the engine.

A iffy fan clutch with the absence of the shroud might just lose enough air flow to overheat.

Wasn't mike having a similar issue with his rig and that is why he added the hood vents & fans? or was that mike just trying to keep his stuff as cool as possible?

Plenty of guys run without fan shrouds, but I'm a firm believer in the benefits them.

You said your fan was turning, but was it actually engaged or just freewheeling? With the engine off, you should be able to turn it by hand, and you should feel some resistance, kinda like it's turning in gooey molasses. The clutch contains a temperature-sensitive silicon fluid, and some fans can be taken apart so you can replace the fluid. I don't have a part number, but you should be able to find it at any Toyota dealer.

I don't have a fan shroud on mine.  I got one, I didn't have it when I put the truck together.  And I don't have any issues.  Do like Stocker said.  With the engine running, you should be able to touch the back of the fan blades, it won't cut your ringers off, and with any resistance it should still spin, if the engine is at temp.  If it slows down, then your fan clutch is bad.  I would lean towards the fan clutch.  My

this maybe be real dumb, but have you checked fluid levels? i'm sure you have, but in my own idiocy  i was having similar problems, plus it was idling rough and i never checked the radiator fluid. turns out a hose was loose and it leaked enough to effect idling...

The fan shroud helps to draw air through the radiator at low speeds as does the fan clutch. I'd look in this area first before anything. You may have low flow which could be a stuck stat or some plugging. The last time I had this issue it was the fan clutch.
