    • My 3.4 swap into a 92 pickup
r151 in place of a r150
« on: Jun 10, 2010, 08:02:10 PM »
Ok guys hopefully this is not a stupid question.

I have a 92excab that I recently completed a 3.4 swap into from a 97 Runner. Everything is good there but I needed to stick with the auto trans and transfer case from the 97 to get through the smog ref. the transfer has no driveline on it obviously.

Anyway, taking this back to manual and looking for the best plan.

My thoughts were 3.4 > 150r (from 92) > Marlin v6 adapter > stock 2.8 case with 23 spline upgrade > Marlin rotated Adapter (that new HD one) > rear case w/ 4.7 Marlin gears.

Then I got an interesting PM from a member suggesting ditching that and finding a r151 with case instead. Since the case is already 23 spline that saves me the 150 for the gear and 350ish for the v6 plate. Id have spent $500 for those parts and for that I can grab a 151 with case.

My questions are physically matching all this up and thats where I have zero experience or expertise.

The 151 that I am looking at is complete with the case but lacking the bellhousing. Am I then going to have to find, and get raped, for the cost of a bellhousing from a 151 or will the one on my 92 r150 work? I have read that the input shafts are different lengths from both trannys and that I will need the 151 housing? but that was only one post on a different forum so i take that with a grain of salt.

Next issue would be the clutch. Am I opening a can of worms by having so many different components (97 3.4, 92 bell, 87 tranny). SHould I be able to just grab an off the shelf clutch from Marlin for a ??? 1987 tranny or are they the same to 92 so in theory my clutch that I have from my 92 when we took it it all out should also work?

I know that this is a lot to answer, but I would appriciate any help!

Thanks much

Found this online.

Quoted from Budbuilt on TTORA
"You CAN take a 3.0 V6 bellhousing and bolt it to the R151F and to the 3.4. "
Here is the link.

But if you have to smog, then you might be in trouble. Because everything will say that you have a auto.

I have been googling for a few days but missed that.

Smog is a concern for sure.

a)I'm pretty sure all Toyota truck trannies have the same spline on the input shaft, so all the clutch plates interchange.

b)You are better off putting the R151 tailhousing onto your R150, especially if you are running a 3.4L.

c)I PM'd you (rather than posting) because it would be better to keep this info on the DL, we don't want to drive the demand for R151's up. Oh well, there's already threads on Pirate about it.
