82 longbed build, 22re and propane!
« on: Apr 12, 2010, 06:57:23 PM »
I just picked up this 82 thats pretty haggard, the motor is locked up and i don't really want to mess with it so i'm going to swap in this 22re and a propane kit that i picked up recently.

Plans

22re on pane
duals 2x 2.28 with marlin adapter
flatbelly
IFS rear axle
5:29's welded rear, Aussie front.
bobbed bed
RUF and 3 leaf 63'' chevys
custom front hanger
38's-40'' tires
and more, just want to keep it simple and cheap.

rear spring hangers i fabbed up a long time ago. might try and use them for the rear.

front axle is off, steering box is off, pulled the wiring and the efi intake off the 22re. And the 22re head and the 22r head look to be pretty close to the same.

82 or 83 22r...

85 22re...

the home brew propane setup i was talking about. :smokin:

Nice start.  Those are really good looking spring hangers.

I'm confused though... Why would you run propane on a fuel injected motor?  I thought that was more of a carbureted thing.

get rid of the 25 year old junk wiring and gas tank.... and propane is just plain simple.

The propane kit is a home brew kit i bought off a local guy here, he put it together with all impco parts.

If you look at grenadedtoys build 72 hilux he is running an re intake with the mixer at the end of the throttle body. It runs really good. As he said propane is easy you can swap an re into it and just propane it not have to worrie about wiring it up and all that and you can still stand it on its head.

I dunno if you were going to run the efi intake plenum but I'd ask ryan(grenadedtoy) about it he modded a 5mge throttle body to work with it because you don't have to alter the tps and all that for it to work.

Looks good though im building a first gen to on the side of my 89. Just wanted something else to build on the cheap or whats the reasoning?? I want me dad to wheel my first gen a little the plan was to do it before I put the 89 under the knife and did the 1ton swap but I tore into the 89 before I finished the first gen lol

I was just going to swap the carbed intake onto the 22re for now, ill have to talk to Ryan and see whats up.

Pretty much just wanted to build something cheap and street legal ish to drive and wheel. Nothing to extreme just a cheap little budget build.

hanger looks legit for sure.
And yeah Im pretty much building mine for free im stoked cause Im just using the toy axles off my truck for the first gen so there done I did buy duals already for a screaming deal and made my money back off the trans so im pretty much into it nothing its way sweet lol. driving to the trails is so much better depending on who your wheeling with and all that or where your going but for the most part its way more fun.

one bad thing I have learned from first gen rears is that there a little shorter than 2nd and third gen rears so they might not give you that good of a shackle angle.

i know, I kinda wished i had the 51'' rears but these should work alright, i'm going to place the spring hanger in the stock location and adjust my shackle angle from there. If i don't like them ill go with a pair of 4'' marlins.
