Not sure what your price range is, but here is what is currently available on the Fresno area Craigslist for under $5k.  I think there were about five from the SA yrs and several IFS rigs to choose from as well.

Is this your first 4x4, or do you have previous trail experience?

What type of wheeling do you plan/expect to be doing the most, i.e., excursions and up to level 3 trails, or level 4 trails and all out rock crawling?

This one here might be worth taking a look Toyota 4x4 - $2000 (Clovis).

If you have someone who can help/teach you auto repair, this could be a good starter rig,Toyota 4x4 Won't Pass Smog (Chowchilla).  Depending on its condition, it should be worth somewhere between $500(dirty needing TLC) and $1500(really clean), maybe a little more if it has a lot of extras.

Depending on how far you are willing to drive, there are a few w/in your price range on cragslist.com
Bakersfield(4)
http://bakersfield.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=toyota+4x4+&catAbbreviation=cta&maxAsk=3000
Merced
http://merced.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=toyota+4x4+&catAbbreviation=cta&maxAsk=3100
Modesto
http://modesto.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=toyota+4x4+&catAbbreviation=cta&maxAsk=3000

A little farther north
Stockton
http://stockton.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=toyota+4x4+&catAbbreviation=cta&maxAsk=3000
Sacramento area
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=toyota+4x4+&catAbbreviation=cta&maxAsk=3000

I would think anything under $3500 would be worth looking at even though it is beyond your $2200 price range, you don't know how desperate some of the sellers might be.

You guys got better prices on used rigs than up here in the PNW.  Alot of those rigs listed in the CG ads, would go for at least $5000 or more.  When I was looking, they wanted $2000 for really beat up rigs.  I mean beat up!!!

That is one of the benefits of living in CA, when you have 50 million plus cars on the road, no ones car is worth that much.  Prior to mid-'07 Toys had a much higher value.  I was easily able to get $1500-2K over blue book value for clean a little more than stock 4x4's, but the last one I sold it was hard to get $2500(blue book), the stupid money was gone.  I ended up selling it  to a guy in Idaho, who was more than happy to buy it basically site unseen.
