different transmissions?
« on: Feb 08, 2010, 09:23:47 PM »
so im picking up a 22r that came out of a 1990 p/u....it was 2wd. g-series i believe. is it the same bold pattern as mine (86 toyota 4wd...not sure what tranny that is) i tried looking for a previous post asking the same question. basicly is there anything different about the 22r that im getting that wont allow me to hook it up to my tranny?

thank

Should be a w55, 2wd version of the w56.  Questions very similar have been asked extensively before.  No, there's absolutely nothing that will prevent any r series tranny from bolting to another r series engine, unless you happen to leave a dowl in the tranny and one in the same position on the engine.

There are two alignment dowels on the back of you engine to ensure correct installation. Sometimes when removing a transmission they will remain in the bell housing and not the block. Go to tech section, scroll down to transmission installion notes, first page, everything you need to know. I would post up for you, but I`m computer illiterate.

Some trannys (L-52) have threaded holes in the bellhousing where the same holes in other trannys(W-56) are through holes.
So if you put a w-56 on a 22R there will be some holes that would need to be bolted with bolt and nut as there won't be any threads in the bell housing or the engine block in some locations.
Finally got my '85 4runner!

this happened to me... i hade to use the brackets off the 4wd engine they come from the trans side as the 2wd comes from the engine side (IIRC) lol...

Once i put a 4wd engine in a 2wd (87 4x4 to 85 2wd) and noticed the oil pan was differant, but going from 2wd to 4wd shouldnt matter
Those are some huge welds!
