My 22re is sometimes stubborn to start.
« on: Dec 06, 2009, 07:20:33 PM »
I have a very well running 22re with a brand new starter. I'm not really worried about this too much but I just wanna know whats causing this so I could address the problem.
Lets say my truck sits overnight or for more than 4 hours. These are the different ways it starts.
1. Fires right up. good to go
2. Fires right up then dies instantly. :headscratch: When I engage the starter, it'll crank for a while until it fires. Sometimes, I even have to crank it 3 times which I hate and is embarrassing when the motor is perfect.

What could be causing this strange phenomenon?

I work a 2000 BMW 540i 6 speed

Seems fuel related. Can you rig a fuel pressure gage to confirm or eliminate a fuel delivery issue? Then go from there. Just a guess with the limited info.

Check the cold start injector and wiring.

I'd bet it's fuel pressure related.  It's probably the one way valve in the fuel pump leaking back the wrong way.  It's designed to keep the fuel rail pressurized between the pump and the fuel pressure regulator but when it leaks, all the fuel goes back into the tank.

Put a jumper wire in the fuel-pump test connector.

This will turn the pump on when the ignition is on, pressurizing the system before you start cranking.

If that solves the problem, you're losing pressure when it sits.

I always thought about that because when i turn the ignition on, I dont hear any noises from fuel pump. and I can see it thru my floor because of my missing inspection plate. But lately its been startin up really easy in the 15 degree mornings.  :willynilly:

That sounds like the cold start timer.

At 15 degrees it actually gets cold enough to work correctly..........
