stubborn 3rd
« on: Feb 21, 2005, 05:56:00 PM »
Anyone have any tips for coaxing out a stubborn 3rd member (Toy rear)?  I can't at this point figure if it's a tight fit or the gasket that's preventing any outward movement of the #@($*%( thing.

Ain't that the 'question you have t' ask.  :haha:  'course I pulled the axles - all the way out, even, so they're not resting on the seals while I wrestle it.

Been tapping it, I guess just not hard enough.  Suppose if I find the rubber sledge I can whale on it.

Anytime I have a 3rd that is stubborn I put the boots to it literally.  I slide under the rig and give it my size 12 right at the flange.  It always pops out.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

You could always try to pry it open with a screw driver if you haven't tried that already.  Do it more at the top so you don't rough up the seal point on the bottom.  Point the screw driver at the seal and hit it with a hammer, it should pop the seal.

Thanks; I'll try all of the above tonight.  I think part of the problem was a) needing some input on how brutal you needed to get and b) the fact that I tore up my back snowmachining and should've given myself the rest of the weekend off before I tried horsing the thing out.

I was real careful the first time as well.  You never know til you do it how rough you need to get.

I took my heads to a shop, and one of my exhaust manifolds was warped, and we couldnt get it off the head with the tools that we had.  being careful, tapping it with a hammer, pryin with a screwdriver.  We take it in, and this guy takes a 10-15lb hammer to it, just whalin on it  :shudder: but he got it off :dunno:
I coulda done that, but I had no idea

Winner -> WhiteTrash

I imagine leaving the gasket remover to seep overnight did a little too.  Better living through kemistry.

Not liking what I see, now...maybe I should have left it together.  Tips of the ring look to be heat discolored, and the pattern's not what I remember from one shop showing me to the next reinstalling it.

Long-short - had it regeared, NoSlip coughed a spring, had it ARBed by another outfit.  In between lockers it was out a whille, and shop B's owner gave me an orientation of the good pattern on them, which is where I'm drawing the not so good impression of what I see now.  Camera's down for a few hours without a battery.

ARB-side bearing doesn't turn nearly as free as the passenger's side either, but the way that's overbuilt with the 'air race' it's hard to tell if it should be a little bit stiffer by default.

Something or nothing?  Would you continue to run these?
specs:  4.88 Yukons from Randy's, can't have more than 10k on them.

Not that I've found.  Just discolored like that all the way around and with the pattern further out toward the edge than I remember looking at on diagrams illustrating setup.

Word I'm getting from a local gear guy is that the coppery look is probably from the ARB line.  Now I want the day off to go inspect it again and deal with it.
