The best way to remove rear sag?
« on: Aug 05, 2009, 07:30:09 PM »
I am attempting my first build('86 4runner). I have added a 4" lift. I have about a 2" sag on the rear of my '86 runner. I know that is typical of 1st gen. What is the all around best way to fix it? I do not want to ruin the ride and I dont want to spend a ton of cash.

New set of springs.  These can be used of course.  Adding a leaf or other tweaking just will break the new stuff since it'll be effectively running on one leaf until that too compresses in a month or so.

new leafs would be my first option also.... I have run blocks before but you would have to go at least a 3" for the e-brake cables to work and axle wrap sucks even worse with sagging weak springs....
Those are some huge welds!

New springs. Go to a local spring shop. They can really do wonders and can be rather cheap.
If you see it, its for sale.

Get a few pairs of leaf springs (3), break them all apart, find the leafs with the most arc, re-assemble.

The sag is common for the trucks that run shells/carry weight all the time.  An easy fix is using the main leaf(cut off the eyes) and the next leaf down(if needed) from the main out of a non-63" Chevy pack.  You can gain about 1.5" of lift per spring.  I would start with using the Chevy main cut about a 1/2" shorter on each end then the Toyota main and run it for a while.  The Chevy mains should yield about 4-500lbs of extra carry capacity which should level you out w/o stiffening the ride.  If you still have the sag in a few months add the next longest Chevy(cut to fit if necessary) leaf to the pack.
