Transmission Swap Question
« on: Jun 21, 2009, 09:01:01 AM »
I have a 1988 w/22RE 4wd w/5spd. The tranny is shot, got a free low mile donor out of a 1989 (same body style as my 88) 4 runner w/v6. Can I swap bell housings and use the v6 tranny in the 4cyl?   :headscratch:

I think the V6 came with a r150. I think a bell housing from a r151 will bolt up to it and your 22re but I don't think the bell housing from a w56 or a g58 will bolt up to the r150.

So if I find a r151 bellhousing you think I can use the r150 tranny? Or should I just look for another 56?

I think you would want the bell housing, tail housing, and transfer case from a R151 and bolt it to the R150 tranny this would give you a R-series tranny with a 23 spline case that bolts to a 22re. I have not done this however but I have heard that it is possible, I just bought the R151.
If you had a W56 I would try and replace it with a W56 to make it easy this way everything will bolt right up and you won't have to make any mods.
A complete(bell housing, tranny, case) G58 will bolt to the engine but you will need the cross member bracket for the G58 because they are different than the w56.
My R151 also had a different shift pattern than my G58 causing the shifter to hit the dash, so I had to cut/bend/weld it.
If the complete transmission bolts up to a 22re you can make them work its just that some are more work than others.
