Quick Transmission Swap Question?
« on: Feb 06, 2006, 06:41:06 AM »
Hi Everyone!

I had an 86 4Runner and decided to start parting it out. Rust is one of the biggest reasons, but I now have a '90 pickup I got for a steal.

Anyways... The Pickup pops out of 1st, 2nd, and wont go into third on any acceleration, only decel. My question is if I can use the 4runner transmission for the time being while I rebuild the other one. 4Runner has a shifter on the trans and the T-case, and the pickup has both shifters in the same plate on the Trans side. These are both 4wd 22re trucks.

I would like not to have to do any cutting in the cab if I don't need to. Also the pickup has no body or drivetrain lift.

Let me know if you need any more info or I was unclear about anything.

Thanks, Jake

If they are both 22RE's, they are the same transmission. You wouldnt even need to worry about rebuilding the other one, they are both W56 transmissions. You may need to swap the transfer cases too, judging by what you wrote about the shifter locations. Should be a straightforward swap.

The runner tranny and t/case will work in the truck, but the t/case shifter will be in a different location. You'll probably have to cut a new hole.If you have a bench seat in the truck it will be a little more tricky, you may have to bend the shifter to clear the seat.If you've got bucket seats in it then it wouldn't be a problem.

Its a bench seat currently. I have some really nice buckets that will go in at some point here. For the time being I am looking to see if this will fit without the cutting. Not that I like to turn down the chance to use the plasma cutter... More just to give me some time before I put the original trans back in after the rebuild.
