timing chain ??
« on: Jun 08, 2009, 01:46:21 PM »
hey im hoping you guys can help me out. i blew the head gasket on my 84 22r and i thought while i was that deep into the engine it would be a good idea to change the timing chain/timing gears but the chain thats in the truck looks like 2 chains hooked together side by side, napa and the dealership keep trying to sell me a single chain. do i have the dual chain that everyone talks about? if so wher can i find a replacement that will fit my truck?

I would replace everything while you had it apart. It will save you time in the long run.
Yup you have a dual timing chain here it is

Sorry wrong link...

Here it is

what do you mean by everything?

Head gasket, Timing chain, water pump, oil pump, thermostat, all gaskets, filters, plugs, wires, belts.

If you have the money I would also do a header and cam. But thats just my 2 cents. It would cost alot more but I like having a clean slate.

if you have a early 84 block just tell them you need a chain, tensioner, gears and guides for a 81 22R

They're probably assuming you have a late 84 block, plus they frequently like to think they know more about the rigs than the guy working on them.  Do like glen said, or tell them you have an 83, either way you'll get the right setup.

thanks alot for the help guys,i got the lc kit  .now i have another question about my other truck also 84 early 22r. if i buy a late model long block will my early model intake, exhaust and distributor all bolt up to the new head?and would this be a good way to go? i thought the late model 22r might be easier to get parts for and also better for an efi conversion if i ever decide to attempt that
