« on: Dec 25, 2008, 11:45:06 PM »
:dunno: what is the "acceptable" amount of axle rap allowed@ the rear axle?  when the truck is parked, the rearend seams to "rock up and down excessively" ( I was pushing/ rocking it to find a squeek)..Im running 3" springs, 3" shackles,35" tires, rear locker

The other day I saw a jeep with a linked front end and you could tell the axle was rocking back and forth when he was gettin it.  :shake:  I don't like much axle wrap at all.  If it's wrappin that much by just pushing it by hand think what it's doin when it's all torqued  :yikes:

Do you have shocks?  I don't have shocks, and I can (by pushing down on the tailgate) bounce the rear tires off the ground.  I regularly have about 150lbs of "stuff" in the bed, and its not that noticable.  Empty, it sucks, but with some weight, its good.

Too much axle wrap, and your springs become "w"'s, or they break from the focused stress.

or they are simple to build for the do-it-yourselfers!

I could set my truck on flat ground with the e-brake engaged and push and pull the tire, and actually move my truck about 2" front to rear, just from the wrap. I'm running 36" tires on stock springs. I got tired of the axle wrap, and just built a traction bar, about 4 hours of free time, and probably $30 worth of material. Now, with the e-brake engaged, the rear axle doesn't move at all. Just remember, if you build one, you will have to allow the axle to move forward and back a small amount, or it will bind.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.
