20r distributor bolt stripped
« on: Jun 19, 2008, 11:19:20 PM »
So on my 20r head. the bolt that holds the distributor in place stripped the threads out of the head, so now it's leaking oil and the distributor isnt tight obviously. whats the best remedy. Can you drill it out and re-tap it, or would a helicoil be better? I was thinking helicoil. Thanks

What size bolt is it?

If for example it's 8mm, figure out was size bolt has tap drill of around 8mm (say it comes out 10mm, but it could be SAE).

Then does a 10mm bolt fit thru the slot in the distributor?

If it doesn't you'll either need to do a helicoil or threaded insert (I prefer threaded inserts because you don't need the odd-ball size helicoil tap).

SAE sizes are probably cheaper, and it doesn't matter as long as the bolt fits in the distributor slot

IF you replace it with a helicoil then you are puting steel in the place of the aluminum threads = stronger
You'll never take me alive
