How much driveshaft compression?
« on: Feb 11, 2008, 07:23:11 AM »
I searched here first.  I just put my duals in and have a 5" lift, I'm taking my rear shaft in to get shortened.  Under the truck measures 41" flange to flange, but how much compression (up) travel should I tell the shop to leave in that measurement.  Thanks.

it depends on how your truck is set up.  You really need to flex it out to be sure.  Marlin recommends an 8" slip with their springs, set up for 3" of compression. I run the stock slip yoke, but I don't have much flex.

What's the stock slip, 4"?  I was running that and didn't drop the shaft, it may have been close though, not sure.  Rears are 5" soft springs with 12" Bilsteins.

Actually, thinking about it, you shouldn't really need that much compression on the rear.  The shackles are on the rear so the axle moves backwards under compression.  Right?

With the rear DS being in the middle the slip joint doesn't move much. I alway just make so it's about 1"-1 1/2" of down travel, or shorter then the total length and using a stock slip joint.

sorry I didn't see the part about it being a rear shaft.  stock slip is fine, I just set mine up slightly forward of center on the slip.
