Ford 5.8L Problems
« on: Oct 18, 2007, 03:37:12 PM »
My friend has a 1992 Ford bronco with a 5.8L V8 in it. She called me one day and said its running like crap, come fix it. Anyway I get out there and it sounded like it had lack of fuel to the motor. So I changed the fuel filter and it helped but did not fix the problem. Looekd at it some more the cap and rotor were fried and the air filter was dirty as crap. Got new stuff still didnt fix it but it helped some more. Looked at some more and she had no to very little coolant in it so I added some.

Anyway what its doing is it Idles great has a little (SMALL) sputter but once you give it gas it wants to die then goes into the rpm if you dont give it too much gas. You can feather it up and hold it at like 3K - 4K with no problem no sputter or anything but when you give it more gas it backfires bad. Checked the timing and its good.

What could it be? I am thinking the Fuel pump. I thought the timing was off at first but its not. Anyone know anything about these?

Oh and it happened kind of all of a sudden. And another reason I think its the fuel pump is she has the tendency to run it empty a lot.

sounds like the fuel pump

How much would you bet on that?

Should I just get a fuel pressure gauge and test and see how much its got?

You should do fuel pressure check to see if the fuel pump in working condition. Ford uses walbro fuel punps and they have the tendeacy to go out by producing less psi which would make your engine run poorly. You should also check the egr system to see if that working.

yea i had a 92 f150 and on the rear tank it would do the same thing, i changed everything but the fuel pump on the rear tank and it still ran crappy but if i switched to the front tank it would run fine so i assume fuel pump was the problem, dont know if that helps any but ill throw it out there anyways

The fuel pump was the first thing I initially said but we tried the cheaper stuff first since I dont have the stuff to test for fuel pressure and all that good stuff.

Good thing I did change all that stuff cause it was pretty bad. I bet this thing will run like a raped ape now (when I fix the pump)

Thanks for the help

How's the vacuum? Spray around and look for leaks, it's the backfire and good timing that confuses me..

I *THINK* that its good but I will check

On MiniSimps truck when his fuel pump went out I believe it was backfiring then too.

The only time it ever backfires is if its at idle and you give it full throttle and hold it.

92 timing should all be computer otherwise I'd say possibly dizzy springs or something that affects timing off idle.

Believe it or not I had something somewhat similiar and it turned out to be..

HEAD GASKET.. hope that's not it ;)

Ugg, thats a very good possibility unfortunately because she ran it low on water and wow... The oil is good and what was left in the water was still green. So maybe not. And it doesnt smoke.

Ill check the fuel pressure. Thanks Brandon

That kit/tester should also plug into a standard compression checker as well.  Two very good tools to have, especially when looking at older used vehicles.
