sounds like the fuel pump
yea i had a 92 f150 and on the rear tank it would do the same thing, i changed everything but the fuel pump on the rear tank and it still ran crappy but if i switched to the front tank it would run fine so i assume fuel pump was the problem, dont know if that helps any but ill throw it out there anyways

How's the vacuum? Spray around and look for leaks, it's the backfire and good timing that confuses me..
92 timing should all be computer otherwise I'd say possibly dizzy springs or something that affects timing off idle. Believe it or not I had something somewhat similiar and it turned out to be..HEAD GASKET.. hope that's not it
