« on: Aug 06, 2007, 10:53:54 PM »
Just picked up 5.29s and install kits for my 85.  I pulled the 3rds already and i was wonderin if anyone had links on how to install them. Id like to install them myself.  i know it can be done with detailed instruction. I know there gotta be some links to how to set them up.

This page will help you decide:

http://www.gearinstalls.com/

You will need a dial indicator and a inch pound torque wrench.

main place where people screw up is they dont get the backlash correct, with a dial indicator and the proper torque wrench no big deal.

More like .004 to .006  Any tighter and you could cause damage to the gears. Remmember you need room for the oil and when it heats up it will get tighter.

The pattern (pinnion depth) is the bigest thing to make sure is right. the rest is easy.

Be careful.  During the final install and the tightening of the flange nut, the article says "Eventually you will feel the effort needed to turn the nut decrease."  This is not true.  The effort will not decrease.  Once you feel no more endplay, shake the entire 3rd member.  You should not hear the sleeve rattle.  You are starting to preload the bearings.  If when you shake the 3rd and hear rattle, keep tightening the nut.

It is not recommender to use the crush sleve. The solid spacer with shims is well worth the money.

The crush sleve can and will cause the pre load to change an even cause the pinnion nut to loosen up.

No, no, no.  Way too tight.  Put it at 3 or 5.  It needs a little room.

Edit:  Oops, looks like Willy's on it already.
