Which clutch?
« on: Aug 28, 2007, 02:30:54 PM »
The mechanic I have pulling the old transmission said that unless the clutch is less than a year old, you're better off replacing it when you put in another transmission.

So I need to figure out which one I need.  Currently I have a Centerforce Dual Friction in it and I love how I can abuse it at low speeds and it doesn't burn itself.  Yeah, I know - supposed to be easy on our clutches and all - yada yada... off-roaders know the reality.    :driving:   :gap:

The question I have is - should I go for the 1600lb organic or one of the ceramic?  I drive a lot of city traffic, unfortunately, so having it be tough but not punishing is important.  What's the dual friction rated at?  I know it's a lot tougher than the OEM 900lb - but how does it compare to the MC?

EDIT: I did some research and it seems as if what I really need is a heavier flywheel and a more normal clutch(since it's low rpms that I'm concerned with)  How heavy is the MC flywheel compared to the stock one?  So I guess the question then is 1200 or 1600lb?  Longevity of the drivetrain is also important as well(read that the ceramics are harder on the bearings and such)

Stay with the organic.  Ceramic clutches are either on or off, there's no slipping a ceramic clutch!  I put in the 1200# turbo one, slightly larger, and the clutch is smooth and easy!  I know alot of the local guys run the centerforce, but if I remember Marlin's are cheaper than a centerforce!

But I don't see a reason to put a new clutch in, if it still looks good?!

Well, I'll have the thing off in a couple of days.  I'll see then.  I checked online and hear a lot of horror stories about the DFs causing more wear to the bearings and flywheel.  Plus, this transmission wearing out certainly can't be doing any good.  I can certainly HEAR the clutch bearings while driving, which is never a good sign.(thankfully MCs kit has all the parts from the looks of it)

Seems CenterForce quality isn't as good as it once was.  Now, a heavier flywheel - that's a bigger deal, evidently.  Just wondering if MCs was better than OEM if I have to get a new flywheel.
