what gearing with 34" tires
« on: Jul 25, 2007, 11:13:53 AM »
so i want to go to 34" LTB's on my truck. right now its stock gearing. motor is stock exept 2.25" exhaust. how slow would it be with the 34's if i stuck with stock gearing. could i simply go with a dual t-case setup or would i need more than that.

thanks
-W.F.

if its a trail rig  just go dual cases

if you drive it on the road  you would  thank yourself  for going with 4.88's

My stock-motor, stock-geared '86 was >way< overgeared when I put 35's on it.  Even mid-range wheeling trips were a strain on the clutch.
I put 5:29 gears in it and now, with slightly-worn 35" MTRs on it, the speedo is more accurate than in my other car, and it's back to being its sprightly 4-bangered self.
FWIW, I did the gears myself and didn't find that to be so hard; get a 'spare' 3rd member and regear that, so you can take your time.  Great source: http://www.gearinstalls.com/  Zuk is The Man.

5.29's, that way if you want to go bigger latter you won't have to regear again

if i did go any bigger i would SAS it and would still have to buy a set of gears for the front axle

Auto or manual tranny?

I agree with 5.29's. I have 4.88's and they're good with my slightly smaller than 33 33's, but when
I had the 34 TSL's (which are the same diameter as 35" MTR's) it was a real dog.

I would SAS it before I spent money on gears.

It seems like if anybody regears a yota if its a trail rig or dd they always go with 5.29s. Im going to run my 31s down as much as possible and either suffer with 33s with stock gearing or go and regear once with 5.29s and run 35s. It seems you cant go wrong with them.

No matter what gearing you chose, you'll regret spending money on LTB's to DD on. They are awesome off road, but ride rough, flat spot easy, and wear fast on road.  :twocents:

Yotajosh is talkin sense!
But, if ya gotta do it, go with the 5.29's.  Once you SAS, you will want bigger tires and need to regear if you go with lower and still DD.  Regearing is one of the best mods you can do for your truck offroad and onroad.  And a locker in the rear till you SAS.  Dont waste your $ on an IFS locker if you have any desire to SAS in future.
4.88 with 33" is perfect
5.29 with 35" is perfect
5.29 with 34" will just get you going faster off the line, and your top speeds will be a little slower-- not so many chances for a ticket

well my dad is runnign LTB's on his sammy and has had them for 2 years and DD's it every day and they just now got to the wear bars. i actually jsut got a killer deal on an IFS locker so i couldnt let it pass. my dad wants to downsize a bit and i want to go up so i will probably end u[p trading him my 31's for his 34's
