85 4runner with 88 motor
« on: Aug 14, 2007, 04:44:29 PM »
hey everyone i just bought an 85 4runner with efi, the motor was completely blown so a buddy of mine had a wrecked 88 with good motor so i bought that and just finished putting it in, runs great have some check engine lights that i have to deal with but no biggy. i just went in today to talk to my buddys dad about getting it smogged and he is gonna do it for me but he said that legally he shouldn't because supposedly i was suppose to go through a referee,?  :smack:to get my new engine evaluated so that i have all the components that the engine needs only for legal reasons. out of curiosity does anyone have experience with this because i don't know wether its really a big deal or not,  should let it fly under the radar or should i get it checked out and have it 100% legal? anyone have advice. am im also having check engine lights that dont necessarily make sense. iv got codes 21, 13, 41,51 and 21 is o2 which i replaced and didnt change a thing

if its a 22re its fine, just leave it alone.... hopefully you also used the computer from the 88....

i dont think there is too much difference between the 22re motors, so there shouldnt be an issue, and only the most discerning of techs would know how to tell that was not the original engine

What computer & engine harness did you use? Did you use the 85 computer on the 88 with the 85 harness or what? Even though it is a 22RE EFI, there are somethings that are different.

I would think that the fuse harness is the same. Did you use any thing from the 85 like intake manifold, injectors, throttle position sensor? Those are different through the years. Check to see what codes you have & post them.

i think that i need to swap the fuse box and the harness for that because im having some major check engine lights and they all seem ridiculous because the thing is running Perfect and its giving me a code 51, 41, 21, 13 and code 21 is o2 sensor which i just put a new one in like 5 minutes ago and it didnt change anything. i have a feeling its trippin out from wiring because if i hook my old computer up i dont get any check engine lights, but since this motors more advanced i dont want to run my old ecu so im thinking it might be the harness that runs underneath the dash because theres those extra 2 plugs that connect to that then theres the 3 for the ecu and i think everything is fine until the harness underneath the dash, they all have the same connectors but im just not sure because so does all the ecu's but there differently built so let me know what u guys think becasue right now i think nothings wrong with my engine, i think its just tweatin out because like i said it holds a perfect idle at 700rps, its got more power than iv experienced in a 22re and it sounds good. im gonna go take pics and post them in a few minutes
