Tranny upgrade - W56 to R series
« on: May 04, 2007, 07:21:16 AM »
I have a line on a 22RTE to R151 "turbo" bell housing.
I hear that its a 2WD tranny not a 4WD tranny.

First - I didnt think they made 2WD 22RTE trucks - musta been a sleep Mustang/Camaro eater...

Is the BELL HOUSING the same between the 22RTE 2WD R trans and the 4WD version?

If so I'll pick up the bell.....

The idea is to go to an R series for now and THEN do the 3RZ swap...

---

Second - looking at the pics - the shifters are in different spots on the R series versus the W series.
At one time I saw a chart with the distance from the front of the bell to the center of the shifter rod... where is that cahrt?

I wanna figure out how much cutting I'll need to do to get this to fit in a 1989 Gen1 4Runner.

---

third - is the bolt pattern for the bell the same between the R151 tranny and the R "6 speed" tranny used on the MT FJ Cruisers? (6 speed - AWD - cetner locking torsen anyone?)
yeah yeah - still IFS...

they made 2WD turbo trucks back in 84... but all the ones I've ever seen were automatics. I do not know if they actually made a 5spd 2wd turbo trans?? I do know the shifter is farther back on the R151, I think its only a couple inches, not sure on the exact measurement, but you'll probably have to cut just a few inches of the floor pan out. Good luck on your swap!

Ya know - other than the console not fitting - the shifters moved BACK by 1-2 inches would NOT be a bad thing... The w56 shifter is kinda "far worward" compared to my DD MKII VW Golf...
yeah yeah - still IFS...
