R Series Tranny ID
« on: Oct 27, 2002, 03:28:48 AM »
Does anyone know of the best way to determine the difference between a R150F and a R151F without looking on the ID plate under the hood of the vehicle it came from? Is there an ID # on the tranny itself? :dunno:

Put it in first gear and spin the unput. Count the output to see what the ratio is.

Just an idea.

You know, It just occured to me that the R150 and the R151F have different tail sections...Right? ???  :thud: :thud: The R150 accepts a chain driven case with a rounder pattern while the R151 accepts a more rectangular t-case, which all the gear driven cases are. Duh. :smack:

I see Marlin crawling (pun) under trucks all the time. It goes like this: "This truck is an 8*? Well it was made in the third week of the second month, the tranny was built in Dec on the third day of the second week by the night shift." yada yada ;)

I am not sure of the truth to all of it but I think they have at least month year tags.

You've got it right. The Clear and obvious way is to look at the rear tail housing. The R151F will have a 6 bolt rectangular pattern while the R150F will have a 8 bolt circular pattern.

Shown below is a R150F (V6) Transmission.

Also, check the bellhousing. The R151F (Turbo) will have a hole at the bottom of the bellhousing while the R150F (V6) does not.

BigMike

This would work great for distinguishing between the R series, but what about comparing, say, a W56 and a R151F? :D. Are there any ID numbers to distinguish them? Or do we all have to rely on counting splines and  ?? :yum:

The turbo tranny has a medium sized hole in the bottom of the bellhousing (2" or less) with a rubber plug, no other Yota tranny has it.  V-6 and turbo's can swap Bellhousing's no other can.  Difference between G-54 and W-56 is number of bolts holding the tranny to the t-case (or that middle housing I'm not sure?)  54's have 8 bolts  56's have nine.  Turbo's have the hole in the bottom (easy as pie)

So the V6 bellhousing will mate to the R151F?? Cool. The V6 housing is completely different than all the others and won't accpet a 4cyl will it?

Actually go the other way.  If you find a v-6 tranny you can slap a turbo bellhousing on, Marlin sais 6's are even stronger than turbo's. Negative is 3.83 first compared to 4.39.  Buy a set of gears with a 5.15 first slap it in, bolt it up, buy the adapter to mate it to a gear driven t-case, or just run the chain case, crawler it out, and you would have the strongest system out there.

Thought about it myself, but the system would be way to long for my 83 shortbed (16"s or so longer, YIKES!)

No the v-6 housing cannot mate to a 4-popper.

Your right about that, Marlin told me he was having difficulties getting these sets over from Japan.

You boys could'nt cut them yourself, could you?  Also I just wanted to throw out all of the possibilities out there for tranny swapping, especially since turbo's are becoming rare and expspensive.
