1990 IFS SWAP ??? HELP
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:10:20 PM »
Hello to all-

I just bought my new Toyota project!  I got a 1990 4cl. 4x4 PU.  90k miles [org]  I have help do over 5 IFS conversions.  Now it’s time for mine!!  Just wanted some in put towards a 80’s Toyota [SA]  v.s.  a dana 44 front? All my buddies are running Toy axles, Just wondering how much greater if any are the 44’s going to be?  Price/Function?  Im ready to start shoppin for this pregnant dog and want her tough and mean as nails!  Here’s what I’d like to run..

4” IFS eliminator ,  35’s [mtr]  5:13w Detroit   F/R
Got a price from some of my boyz @  Trail G.   w/ out lockers/gears/tires/  everything for  $1,3500 f/r

You boys @ MC get close to that $ for a friendly neighbor???   [ Rather buy through u!!]

Will I have an issue w/ 35’s on a 4” kit with minor trimming on well? Also going to be a daily driver until I complete the build, so a bit of street driving for another year or so until I buy a diesel.  I’d really like to stay away from ARB’s only because I don’t want to have to buy a compressor right away! Plus I have found the ARB’s  to freez up in the snow!   Some general feed back would be killer!  Again Im ready to start buying some :pokinit: for my toy!   I  WANT MY [SA]   Installed by JULY!!!

I also have a a buddy w/ 3rd gen running  a 44. Still waiting on some inners. [BO]  I will post some pics next weekend of the build!  [can't wait]!  Thanks for the quick feedback!  Just wanting to know whats better?  the toy axles are breakin knuckels ever 3rd oor 4th outing! Just dont want to be wrenchin on my baby ever trip thats all!   Or whats a set-up like Marlin has... with a toy axle w/ 60 knuckles run? [estimated]??  I WANT MY GOAT TO HAVE GOOD "FOOTING"  Also if you happen to have/ run into some 35/12.50/15 in good shape Ill take em'  i.e. 50% or better.  Anyother feed back would be great!!

PS  I dont mean to cross shop you guys! No offense!  I just would like to get most everything @ one time. And as you all know this stuff costs ALOT! Just want to make sure Im gettn the best $ I can.  Again I appreciat all the info/ ideas/ you guys are offering up!

Thank You,

Toyota axle is stronger than a 44, especially with Longfields in the Toyota. I think you mean they are breaking birfields - the knuckle is part of the housing, REALLY bad if you break that (and I've never heard of anyone who has). No offense, but if you break more than one set of birfs before putting in Longs, you're not the brightest bulb in the drawer...

ONLY reason to go with a 44 is if you want full-width or need driver's side drop, and even then there are better options IMHO.

i went with a 44 because  they turn sharper dont have issues with steering arms coming loose, and wider. spares axles are cheap at the junk yard and i think with alloys and CTMs they are very strong. Bobby long only tested yukon axles not superior axle or alloy USA axles which known to be stronger then the axles imported from india for yukon.
