Cam, header and exhaust on a 22r can make a noticeable difference. Never like a 3rz, but much simpler and cheaper. With a motor swap, you're going to have down time. Not good if it's the primary transportation. Spend the first couple month's getting things lined out working properly. Unless you have a good knowledge of Toyota's or a good mechanic friend, it can be overwhelming. If you can look at a 3rz wiring diagram and understand it, go for it.
Ya...I know it takes a while to do a motor swap like a few months. I want to tackle it though I think it would be worth it in the end. I want to put in a 22re and put a 261 EB cam in and some DT headers....but then I figure if I was gonna do an EFI swap I could do the same ammount of work and put in a 3rz and have a lot more power and a more reliable motor. In the beginning I was gonna beef my 22r when I rebuilt the head, but I realized how much better it would be to put in a 3rz.
I want to go to EFI because I hate how my carb floods on freeway hills and trails. Although I love the simplicity of a carburetor and being able to tune it really easily, I think EFI will be a huge upgrade
