I have a guy parked next to my shop who's been working on that swap for three years trying to make it perfect- it's absurd.  He stretched the firewall by cutting it and putting in extra sheet metal.  With the engine in place he has enough room to put his whole hand behind the engine with room to spare.  He also had to notch the frame to fit headers.  He basically custom fabbed everything to get the engine to sit low and back.  I have noticed that wiring was a huge pain for him, but I don't think it necessarily has to be.  anyway, it seems like it could be as easy or as hard as you want.  I know one of the dudes running around here has done it, check the engine swaps thread.  I have to say though that the 5.0 looks like the sweetest swap to do.  keep us posted

yea,,,but there is a reason people use chevys beisedes the fact there cheaper to build,,,,,ford sucks!Sorry I coud not help more..I work alot of fords and hate them hate them hate them..WTF is up with that funky ass efi set up they run on the 5.0 and 5.8..could they not think of more crap to hang on that p.o.s..I assume your using a carb 5.0 due to the fact you said c-4?Still...Ford :moon: :reg:

Sorry I was not more help full...Guess the was a rant rather then tech for me.. :twocents:

im running 91 5.0 & a 77 c4 with a art carr rmvbody & revers gated art carr shifter to a atlas and i love it lots of power shifts great oh im sitting on 42s with hp60 f&r and can still burnem off the instal was easy so was the wiring and i used $60 blockhuger headers from summit .

84runner

Well hmm I would use a body lift for sure and for sure a ford small block.  You can always go with a painless wiring get also.

i'd say go with painless if you're running efi.  probably much simpler than gutting it out of a donor vehicle.

i've always been interested in a 302 or 289 swap, but it seems to be a bit much work for me, and i like the idea of keeping the heart of my drivetrain all-toyota :)

:thumbs:Yea, now thats what I'm talkin about!!! :king:
I'd convert to the EFI myself, gonna hate that carb when your settin sideways on the side of a rock.
Ford 302's advantage is the dist up front and a narrower block V-8. When I do mine convert on my 85 Toy I hope to advoid the use of a body lift, room for the radiator is my only worrie :nerv: :headscratch:

northwest offroad has all the parts you will need .engine swap headers and radiators motor mounts every thing i was looking in to it with my 89 but using a world class t5 out of a mustang instead of the c4

I used a fordmotorsports harness very easy. the 89 to 95 have a roller cam for lightning fast thotle response and are lighter and have more trq & hp than there chevy conter part and belive it or not im a chevy fan. sorry butt my experience is that a t5 is apileosh#t unless you spend alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I hear the GM TH350 is the auto trans to use - Advance Adapters has a plate to Ford 302's $400.00 + - But beats using weaker trannys

Sounds like a pricey swap if you add tranny cost to that adapter

If you want cheap stay home and play video games.and the c4 is not a weaker trany  its as strong if not stonger than the th350.  drag racers have been using this trany forever with lots of success. ok i'll tell you again i have a 91 5.0 with 300+hp a  stock c4 accept for the valve body output shaft and shifter hooked to a 3.8 atlas F&R HP60s 538s Farb Rspool and 42s have done plenty of burrnys. go to the hammers every year have done all trails many times, allso do the rubicon & fordice every weekend in the summer with no trany problems. its been in my rig for 5years.

Toyoballs

Hay J&M, got a photo of your rig - sounds awesome. How can you tell a C4 from a C6 trans. I got a 89 3/4 ton van with a EFI 302 / Auto but I don't know what type of trans it is. I think it has an overdrive. Heck I 've been so busy I just bought it for $150 and drove it around back of my garage - now I use it for a storage shed until I find some Dana 60's

As far as I can remember c-4's have a removable bellhousing, and the van should have a aod if I remember right.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

J&m

yes white trash is right. c4 & c6 are similar butt the van probly  has an aod a c6 has a wide trans pan like the th350 & the c4 has a small pan very diffrent.

Yea , I'd like to c-photos if you don't mind...
A tranny specialist told me today (To make things more confusing) Ford also made a C-5 = same as a C-4 but more clutch packs?!?

Im not a year specialist.but late 70s bronco & ranchero are good ones and easy to come by c5s are raer and im told cant tell by looking at it.oh some c4s have the dip stick in the pan try to find the ones with the dip stick in the trans housing.

89 toy

i heard the c5 came in bronco II's and had a centrificul lockup torque converter

you got it they had a lockup converter.  basically like a TH350-c the only diff is the lockup converter and the controler for it.

From what my oldest brother says (hes a college educated tranny dude) says a c-5 is just a c-4 but it is a bit stronger. Otherwise its the same.  Ill get a pic of a trans in the a.m.

IF the question is c-4 or c-5 go c-6  And it would probably be cheaper to have the bell housing cut of and bolt on one to fit your 302 as getting a adapter to runa TH350
