valve seals

any one change these seals on a 22RE with out removing the head?
this is a new rebuild but i cant find valve seals on my reciept (sp) and it smokinf on compression and when it sits and idles for a long time.

any way i have it tore apart and im doing them so i feel better.
any tricks and what are the thoughts on changing the head gasket even though,its new with a copper spacer and it a toyota gasket but i still will need to retorque.

gasoline engines aren't supposed to be sitting and idling for a long time.....

i don't think you can change the valve seals without removing the head....

You can change the valve seals with out pulling the head off. There is a thread that someone else started a few months back asking the same question. Try doing a search first.

dam i wish i would have read this before i took off the head bolt,i think that rope trick would work.

well now im changing the head gasket as well,i am picky on how my junk is done and i want it sone right the first time

if you dont use the rope thing you can take a compression gauge kit and hook a air hose to it instead of the gauge and adjust you pressure to 100psi and it will hold the valves shut so you can remove the spring for seals

That method works good but the only thing I don't like about it is if you loose air for any reason like a blow out on the air line your using, you loose the air out of the cylinder & the valve falls in. Then your stuck pulling the head. The rope is pretty much fool proof as long as you leave the rope hanging out of the spark plug hole. Everyone has their preference. Choose what you are comfortable with  :twocents:

Yes it will, but.....
