Longfield Hub Gears
« on: Dec 10, 2006, 10:06:51 PM »
According to the Longfield website (http://www.toyotasuperaxles.com/) it sounds like once the birfields are upgraded the inner hub gear becomes the "weak' link.  Is this the case?

It seems that I have heard of people either breaking the bolts on the hub or the differential gears.

What do you think?  :dunno:

If you do break a hub gear you are verry likely to ruin the splines on the longfield birf, which is not covered by the waranty. lots of $$$$ down the drain! :dunno: Don't have longs yet but soon mabye.

I installed the hub gears with the birfs and axles just to make sure I was covered.

I would say with your 35s you want need them BD.  I only broke one of those gears ever but I broke three of the bigger ones that he doesnt sell.  As long as you dont keep spinnning your birf inside the broken hub you'll be good

So are you guys saying that if my stock inner hub gear breaks and strips the 30 spline's that it's not covered under warranty?  Thats kinda crapy!!  Thankfully last weekend when I broke, it was the studs that hold the hub on!!

i have the 30 splines/diamond/locker setup. i have the front range/ARP studs for the hub and high steer but have yet to install the hub studs till i get the chromo gears. i'd rather replace the studs or the hub body than a chromo birf.

and yes the warenty(sp) does not cover striped splines due to stock hub gears breaking. you'd have to call bobby for an explaination.

I dont blame him for not warrantying stripped splines caused by broken hub gears, its not a defect in his part, its another part failing and destroying the longfield. Besides if youre gonna spend the $645 for longs you might as well spend another $140 for the gears, its cheap insurance as olivedrab85  said.

even if you break the cromo hub gears and strip the splines he won't warranty the birf either.  kinda wierd how i haven't broken a single hub gear or all the hub studs.  i have broken a few studs at a time but never all if them.

I have broke hubs before, and this is my first time breaking all 6 studs at once. Though I would rather break them than a 30 spline anytime!! :gap:  I understand why he wouldn't replace a 30 if another part broke now.

the 30 spline birf and chromo hub gear are made from the same metal so that if it does break (which it wont) its not gonna strip the splines anyways.  Point being if I was you black diamond I wouldnt even worry about it.  There is always gonna be a weak link but I doubt you'll find it with that runner.  Its your deal though

I'll have to ponder it more, but I'm thinking that I will get a set of upgraded FROR hub studs and the Longfield hub gears in the future and then short of a ring & pinion I shouldn't have anything to worry about with my driving style.  I'm always a fan of avoiding broken parts whever possible.  I much prefer to be the rig going for parts.

There's always u-joints too.  Seen two let go form brute force being bound up.

I'll take your word on it.  I know when I called Marlin Crawler a few years ago and inquired about aftermarket u-joints they wanted to know what purpose they would have.  I purchased a set of factory replacement from them and have been fine.

My buddy managed to break a CTM on his 1/2 ton Blazer, but he thinks something was binding up.  He was still only the 3rd to break that year.

stock toyota u-joints are rated at 1& 1/4 ton.  If you break something  your drive line angle must be retarded or something.  snohman twisted a square driveline and broke a 1350 ujoint and and broke the out put on a turbo t-case but the toy joint at the t-case was fine

I'd be willing to bet that Marlin himself doesn't have problems with his 1300:1 gearing so you don't have to worry.

I'm not worried, but I do carry spare driveshafts and u-joints.  Driveing style can make all the difference.  If you not worried about pushing stuff to the limit, it will break.  I've nursed stock birfields in a v8 powered toy for 4-5 years before I broke one.

On the hub gear, just had a friend pop one on 37"s.  Chewed up the splines a little on his 30 spliner.  In the mail is a new birf and chromo hub gears.  I order gears and studs also.  Bumping up to 39.5 Iroks started making me think.

A little off subject but if you stick a BL hub gear in an IFS hub can you use it on a straight axle?  or are the internals different too?

NO,   a search of pirate4x4.com would explain why.

I much prefer to be the rig going for parts.

well hey someone has to do it when I break down.

I don't see a reason why you couldn't buy the hub gears somewhere down the road.  I know that you like to well overbuilt then have something have a possibility to go wrong.  It deffinatly wouldn't be on the top of my to get list but sometime down the road we can put them in your axle.
