choke problems
« on: Sep 22, 2006, 08:56:37 AM »
The otherday a mechanic helped me out for free. My choke was only opening a little so he adjusted it. I thought he had done me a favor but now with how it is set it doesn't close at all anymore so my 4runner would not start yesterday morning to drive to work.

I have two questions: is there anything that commonly goes out on these that I could check.

And two, is there a manual choke conversion for the stock Toyota carb? I have choked my bikes manually for years so It would not be a big deal for me to have to choke my truck.

What year truck?  Electric or water choke?  There should be a little wound wire coil inside the choke housing, and I've seen em burn out.  The end could have come off keeping it from holding it's adjustment.  Carefully take the cover off and inspect it.

there be 3 screws,  loosen them  then rotate the assembly  till you get the choke just  barely closed,  then when you turn the key on,  power goes to the choke  and warms the element inside  causing it to open the choke

if it doesnt check to make sure power is getting too it,  if  it is  then you need a new choke  element

Well, When I get home first think I will have to do is check for power to the choke since I know it doesnt open at all with the ignition.

Problem solved!

I loosened the three screws and started turning it, trying to get the choke plates to close, after I had turned it 180 degrees I decided to pull it apart to see if the coil inside had broken, when I pulled it off  every thing inside was fine but I was able to see what the problem was.  the way  it was set the tab on the coil would have hat to come around almost 360 degrees in order to hit the tab on the  rod to actualy turn the choke.

Put it ll together again and it started on the second crank.

Thanks for the tips every one
