20R water choke weber?
« on: Dec 08, 2010, 10:54:21 PM »
i have an 80 with a 20R and i wanna convert to a weber. I have a water choke and ive looked everywhere and i cant find webers for 20R's with water chokes, they are all either electric or manual chokes.

Do they even make water choke webers for 20R's?

After poking around on ebay last night, I can't remember seeing any; they have electric chokes from what I saw.

I have one on my 80 as well, 32/36 dgav.  DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!  Seriously, I can't yell that loud enough!  Get a good 22r carb, or get a decent one and rebuild it, get the 22r carb to 20r intake adapter from lc engineering, and run the 22r carb on your engine.  Much less picky, more dependable, and flows the same as the weber.

Again, don't waste your time or money on the weber

id love to do that..if i had 900 bucks.

I pulled my carb off 2 months ago and had it rebuilt. put it back on and now it runs worse. it idles at about 4 grand. my boyfriend talked me into a weber.

I had a similar problem with my '80.  It would only idle above 2,000 rpms.  I ran it like that for a while and after fiddling with a bunch of things it ended up being caused by a crusty vacuum advance.  Now I can dial it in to idle at a reasonable rpm.

I suspected carb problems and I was considering buying a weber.  I even bought a rebuild kit but trouble shooting the other parts saved me buying a carb.

dont get me wrong it would be sick to leave the stock carb on their but i think all  your emotions is just clogged or something so we should just check all that first.  :driving:

I replaced the entire distributor with a good used one but the problem was just the vacuum advance itself.  It finally got seized enough to fight with the mechanical advance and wiggle out the little set screw that holds it in.  So it basically was sticking out and saying "Here I am dummy!  Replace me!"  The truck ran crappy like that for a long time before I figured it out.

This may not be your problem but you have similar symtoms as I did and this is what my problem was so it's worth a shot unless you just really want the weber.  A new vacuum advance is like $120 so you will want to find a used one to troubleshoot. I got my entire distributor for $20.  It was off like an '82 or '83 22r.  I had to swap the pickup coil plug but other than that it was identical to my old one.

ive had bad luck with carbs. truck sat for 4 years so i spent 135 getting the carb rebuilt and still have problems...worst problems than before. weber just seems like the easier way to go.

You'll kick yourself.  Have somebody competent rebuild the toy carb and you'll be content.  As soon as I move, I'll be rebuilding a 22r carb, getting the lce adapter to put it on my 20r intake, and the weber will be going on ebay and here so some other poor sob can deal with the picky little pregnant dog!

I got my propane system for a little over $700. Tanks are cheap too if you know where to look.

I just say propane because yes it is a little bit of an investment but my truck turned over with a tap of the key after I installed it. I was not dealing with a carb that had been sitting for 25 years. (My truck has 26,000 miles...hehehe) The price outweighed my time and the $100 here and $50 here for rebuild kits and miscellaneous parts.

Propane is great, unless you live in California and is a DD. It will never pass the visual for SMOG.

Well webers seem to be working for about half the guys who use them, the other half hate them with a passion.  I've been getting up to 22 mpg with my stock carb on my 20r, so that, and the fact that my goal is to spend as little as possible on the truck rule out the weber for me.  If I got a free one I would probably try it...  I got my entire truck for $250 so it's a little hard for me to spend more than that on just a carb.

Good luck...
