W56-B Noisy 3rd Gear
« on: Aug 28, 2006, 04:09:40 PM »
I am by no means a transmission man, so any thoughts you guys could offer would be appreciated.

History:
I just got my rig up and running since its overhaul. I got this tranny from behind a blown motor (no oil). I havn't driven it until yesterday and heard some bad things. Now aside from the drive shaft ange / CV problem that I know I have and don't plan on fixing until after MCR5.

The problem:
Excessive noise while running in third gear and third gear alone. It's most noticable between 32-37MPH (22RE, 5.29's, and 37" ssr's) and makes a bogging or lugging noise with out a loss in power. Just cruising in third I can vary the speed above and below this range and the noise goes away. I am not going to fix this before MCR5 (priorities right) but I would like to get an rough idea of what I am looking at.

Thanks in advance.

agree with 79Coyotefrg.....I had an 84 where the tranny started to go out at about 120K.....3rd gear was first to make the noise....then I could hear it in 5th to a lesser extent. 4th was absolutely quiet.  Could be just that input bearing.
