Charge light problems
« on: May 22, 2006, 08:38:34 PM »
Well here is my problem, The other day on my way home from work my charge & parking brake light came on. So I thought my alt. was going out. Well I made it home and took the Alt. to the local napa to have it tested. They said it was ok and was putting out 14.5 volts.
So I re-installed it and fired the truck up. I've been driving it for the past few days and the lights are still on. when I rev the engine to about 3000-3500 rpm the lights flicker and go out, when I let off they come back on. Now this would make you think it wasn't charging and needed the extra rpm to put out the proper volts, but they said it was working just fine at napa and the battery is fully charged after driving too and from work with plenty of juice to crank her over. I swaped in a new battery and it still does it. What could be causing the lights to do this?
Oh yeah, It's an 85 toyota with 22r.

a short in the system, i had a light flip out on me for awhile, finally after ruling out what it was for as a problem, i looked at the sensor, the plug had disconnected and was grounding itself out and triggering the light

Corrosion at the battery terminals could cause it depending on what year you have.

Well I'm not sure if its internal or externaly regulated. I'm thinking its internal because I don't see a regulator anywhere. I"ll try and clean the terminals a little better and see if that helps. What sensor are you  talking about Jim?

85 will have the internal regulator so it would have been checked when they tested it.

my issue was with the oil low light, i said it was related though because what i was experiencing was a wire that had become disconnected and was grounding out

as far as them saying its good, there are many factors that effect the test, and the people that run those tests dont always know how to do it, or interperet the results, its possible to test fine on a bench and not work properly installed

If it is charging your battery Ok, then it may be a bad ground, check to make sure your ground strap from the engine to the firewall is intact. If that wire is loose or broken it will cause your dash to freak out.

on my '81 with 22r that same charge light comes on and off at random times.  I did the same thing-take the truck to NAPA only to have them say its fine.  Install a voltmeter instead of relying on idiot lights!  When was the last time the alt. brushes were replaced?

I've got the same problem on my 80. Charge light is on, new regulator, alt and battery. With it running I've only got 12.3 volts at the battery. Still haven't figured out the problem. Sorry to hijack.

Most of the time, it's connections.  The plug on the back of the alt gets sorta loose and wobbles.  Next time the light comes on, wiggle the plug and check the lights again.  Mine used to come on any time I hit a bump.

I've only had the truck for two years and who knows how long it's been since the brushes have been replaced.
Well now I've got another problem, My starter don't work. I don't know if it's related or not?  the battery is fully charged and it just makes a click noise. I pulled the starter and used my jumper cables to hook it up to my battery and jumped the soleniod and it works just fine. I re-installed it and it still dont work. Everyting is getting juice so all I can figure is it's not grounding.

it grounds through the case, so if it's bolted up, it's grounding.  It could just be weak.  If you test it like that, you should put a load on it.(read as: press 2x4 against drive as it turns)  If it stops under load, it's shot.  have you tried jumping it on the truck?  if not try that; make sure the solenoid wire is getting power when you turn the key.

Yeah the solenoid wire is getting juice and I tried jumping it on the truck and it made a rattle/nocking noise. It's a napa reman I bought last year. I wonder if it has a warranty.

Well, you're talking to the right guy, then.  All NAPA starters have a warranty.  Does it still have a sticker on it?  A Rayloc with a 244- PN has a 2year, a Rayloc with a 44- PN is a 5 year.  An NAE (or NAPA pro electrical) has a 3 year warranty.  Do you still have the receipt, cause some stores can be kinda stiff on that issue.

Where are you from?

Same thing with me. Its bugging the crap out of me. Only thing is i dont have a new alt or regulator. Battery is only 6 months old. But also when the lights on the dash came on, the volt meter stopped working and then 2 days later the oil press gauge stopped working. That I didnt get. It still has oil pressure but those 2 gauges dont work. And its barely over 12 volts with the truck on. Sorry to highjack too but any ideas? Mine is an 81.

Yeah, I still have the receipt. It says NAE Reman on the receipt and I think there is a little of the sticker left on the starter.
