CV Driveshaft questions
« on: Apr 17, 2006, 09:24:59 PM »
Im trying to build a CV driveshaft for my 85 4 Runner , I know that the because of its 30 degrees of angle the front CV is preferred to use BUT can a CV from an IFS truck be used with out "clearancing" the joint for more angle ? has anyone done this ?  :dunno:
Happiness is shiny new parts for the beater truck !

I can't help you on that, but I can add to the questions...where's the best place to get std replacement u-joints for a front toy driveshaft?
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

This week when replacing the U-joints in a 1983 toy pickup we replaced all u-joints using Napa u-joints.

the ifs cv  could be used but  it wont help  much

and IF you use a cv  you have GOT to rotate the rear pinion up

CRSHROX, its all going to depend on what angle your driveline is actually at.. thats going to determine whether or not you'll have to "clearance" them... remember the more you clearance the weaker they'll be so prevent that at all costs.

I've found a great way to help driverline binding for people who run an extreme angle. Ever see those mowers that mow on side hills and have the "flap" blades that move up and down?  That's a driveline under there and the CV's for those can take an extreme angle without rubbage but they're a bit pricey.. ALSO they make a pretty beefy set for offroad applications.

remember the more you clearance the weaker they'll be so prevent that at all costs.

I call :pokinit: on that statement. The amount you actually take off for clearancing is next to nothing. And once clearanced, they run at the same angle. I prefer to use IFS CV's because they are more common than the early ones and can be picked up for cheap. I run a clearanced V6 CV in the rear and a clearanced 4Cyl CV in my front for that same reason. CHEAP.

I think most people avoid clearancing them because they are either scared to try it, or are a liiiiittle bit on the lazy side.

Here's a good link if you wanna try it, takes about 2-3 hours for a newb:
