I GOT NEW TIRES! --now with pictures--
« on: Jan 25, 2006, 06:24:42 PM »
...For my Supra!

The old Kumho's were worn so bad you could almost see the air in them!  The inside edges, and well, most all of the rear tires, were shot.  One of the rears has a bad  case of tread separation- so bad it would shake violently at any speed over 40.  130 was scary as hell! (I didn't know about the tread separation at that tiime...or I wouldn't have been going 130...)

The plan was to put the Kumho's to a proper smoky death, with photographic proof.  That plan failed miserably.  I got my new tread in today at work, and went home at lunch to get the Supra.  I found it with a dead battery and a flat tire.  Turns out, that tire with the tread separation had gone flat (I guess it was REALLY worn in that ones spot... :yikes: ) and I had left the trunk light on which killed the battery.  Damn.  I winched it onto the trailer and drug it back to work...sad that I couldn't do a big smoky burnout.  :tantrum:  :rivers:

I did, however, get the new tires installed and balanced, and a new battery put in (the old one was so dead, it wouldn't even take a charge.  I think I left that trunk light on in December...  :disturbed: )  I went with the Nitto NT-555 extreme traction radial, and man, what a difference!  They're so smooth and quiet- it's like a new car!

I swear its faster too...mainly because the tires don't just spin in 2nd and 3rd gear...   :eyebrow:

I got a decent, but not a GREAT deal.  Still cheaper than I could order them from anywhere online though.  Check out Falken for cheap-ish tires that are pretty good.

I have Pirelli P Zero Nero tires on my Chevelle, mounted on 17x8 American racing Torq Thrust II's. They made a huge difference in the handling department, especially without power steering. Got a good deal too, payed like $130 a tire. They are by far the best tires I have run on a car.

Well, the new tread got me all interested in the old Supra again.  Just letting it sit in the garage for the last 15 months, I forgot how much fun it is to drive.  For a almost 20 year old car, it still just flat hauls ass, and runs with the new Mustangs and Vettes...

I got antsy and went out racing, which turned into an argument about who's cars makes how much HP.... so we ended up at the Dyno today.  On pump gas at 25 psi, the old Supra laid down 387RWHP  :eyebrow:   On race fuel at the low altitude in Las Vegas it ran 418, so 387 at 5700' isn't too bad.  Spanked the stupid Z28 that was there anyway...and my car has 2 less cylinders and is 15 years OLDER than that Camaro...

The bad news is that she's smoking a little...signs of the rings finally letting go under all that boost.  I'm gonna drag my spare short block out of the shed and start to build it.  I've got a set of .020" over pistons hiding out there for it...  I figure I'll spend some time building it and swain-coat the entire thing, have it balanced really nicely, and then just re-use my extisting head an headstuds, since they've only got 2500 miles on 'em at most.  I might step up and put a new turbo on, so I can lower the boost but keep the HP...who knows

For now, its fun to drive and only smokes a tiny bit when you hit the skinny pedal.  (nothing like tromping the accelerator in my F250 turbodiesel...)

Khumo's are pretty good. My buddy just got those exact tires on his RX-7 but I doubt they will last long. He has toyo proxies on the front and khumo's in the rear, the toyos are ready to be replaced.

This spring I am moving to 18" rims and toyo proxies 4. Should be silky on the freeway and handle a lot better than the Potenza's I have now.

I had Kumho's on the car and wasn't impressed.  They're hard and wear for quite a while, but they don't stick to the road worth  :pokinit:

They do, however, meet the requirements of cheap tires that smoke lots!

What is this "swain coat" you speak of?

I'll have to find a web address for you...but it's oldskool technology.  Basically, you coat the inside of the crankcase, the underside of the pistons, the rods, the weights on the crank, etc. with this stuff to help dissipate heat and oil.  The coating makes a slicker surface than the rough casting on the inside of the block, so the oil runs down and back into the sump faster.  On my Supra, theres oil squirters that spray the underside of the pistons to help dissipate high combustion chamber temps...the coating would help that oil run off the pistons and away from the cylinder walls fasters do the oil control rings on the pistons dont have to do all the work.  It was popular with hot-rodders back in the day, and has since gone high-tech.

Heres the address, after a little looking: http://www.swaintech.com/race.html

I first saw it in Sport Compact Car magazine a few years back, on their Project 300ZXTT

The forum won't let me post pictures right now for some reason...it keeps saying an error has occured...

Do a search for my posts...I've posted pictures before.  I'll keep trying to put some up in this thread.  Oh, and for the record...theres only one turbo on my car, but it's not the stock CT26  :eyebrow:

You want boxy look at an 86 or older supra.  Lookin good Ryan, I do dig me some supras!  A guy who has an engine shop here has an 87(?) n/a that he was sellin fairly cheap, but not cheap enough for me.  The ones I keep finding limited slips on in the yard are always white too!  Wierd.

boxier than a mkII Supra?  Mitsubishi Starion or Dodge Conquest Turbo.  They can be made to haul ass, but are as boxy as a 'frigerator
