Heater fuse as theft deterant?
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 05:50:23 PM »
I read that the heater fuse on Toyotas can be used as a theft deterant. Here is the statement I read:

"Toyota ties the oil pressure switch to that circuit with the heater fuse. If the engine senses there isn't oil pressure it cuts the fuel pump off. So the engine runs for about 30 seconds and dies, you can restart it , but it won't run for long"

Any truth to this statement? :help:

I figured this was "tech" but if not, it can be moved to the "theft" section. :)

I don't know about the wiring, but the theory is correct.  NOTE: this will ONLY work on EFI vehicles.

No, this must be a myth. I have seen most Hilux models (1979-1995 including 4runners of course) operate with the oil gauge unplugged, and the fact that there is no difference between a SR5 ECU and a non-SR5 ECU.

As for OBD-II versions (T100, Tacoma, Tundra, etc), all I know is that the 4cyl 3RZ T100s do not have this safety feature, as Marlin and I both drove our trucks around for days before getting our oil pressure gauges hooked up while we were doing the conversions, and I also know that both 2003 and 2004 3RZ powered Tacoma's also do not have this feature, as both Dean and Bevin's rigs have been driven without the oil gauge hooked up as well.

It makes complete since for this fail-safe system. It is not present in any external wiring (loomed) so it would have to be part of the inner circuitry of the ECU. But I have never heard of this before.
