All moving trucks are expensive.  I have rented a Uhaul truck from Colorado to Washington State and trailers from Southern California and Ohio to Washington State.  I actually pulled an empty trailer from Oregon into California because is was over a grand for a trailer in California (they have a shortage of equipment).

As for Uhaul, the local trucks are a great deal for very short trips, but the mileage charges add up quickly.  I got a $20 truck and ended up with a $100+ bill after moving about 35 miles not including gas. MAKE SURE YOU MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS WITH THE LOCAL PLACE AND NOT ONLINE, YOU WILL LOSE EVERY TIME.  I reserved an inclosed trailer for an in-town move and my reservation ended up on an open trailer which was no good, I ended up renting a small truck instead.

If you are going a long distance, the 26 foot Uhaul truck that I rented went 75 mph tops.  I also made a trip (Tenn to Colorado) in a 14 or 17 foot Budget truck that would go 81, but the governer knocked 6 mph off if you bumped it.  In both trucks I was consistantly passed by Hertz trucks so I think that they are the fastest on the road.

Another note is don't trust the advertised size of the gas tanks.  The 26 ft Uhaul that I had claimed a 60 gallon tank.  I ran it until it stalled twice and realized that it was only a 50 gallon tank per the manual (not the upgraded tank as advertised).  I put 55 gallons in it at the station...I almost got to walk.

Uhaul and Budget have auto transports for towing, I don't know about the rest.

they are, but no longer for private rentals.  They are now a coprorate shipping company.  I think they may do moves, but it is like any other moving company, not do it yourself

now if it was a 50 gallon tank,  and you put 55 in it that means you sucked it completely empty and spilled 5 gallons on the ground,  or it was a 60 gallon tank and it was very near empty.  most tanks will run empty befor they are actually 'dry'

Some tanks usually hold more than advertised, but the manual in the truck said 50 gallon capacity.

I work for Ryder, and get killer deals on renting trucks, but only for local moving. Ryder doesn't do one way rentals anymore. The next time anyone rents a U HAUL truck, make sure to check out the tires, brakes if possible, oil, coolant etc. their maintenance program sucks! :reg:
