Trying to get the flywheel off!
« on: May 20, 2005, 10:54:35 PM »
I'm replacing the tranny, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, rear main seal on a 82 SR5 22r 5 speed 4x4.  I got everything off except the flywheel.  Those 6 bolts are on pretty good.  I can't keep the engine from spinning when I'm wrenching on those bolts...Any pointers?  I guess I could try to rent an impact wrench or something.

Thanks in advance!

Put a pressure plate bolt back in with a length of chain around it and attach the other end of the chain to a leaf spring or the frame etc.  The chain will keep the engine from turning over. ;)
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

yeah do that! Much better Idea than mine. I put an extension between the engine and lower pulley, it ended up wedging into the radiator!!    :_oops:

Wow, talk about a WHITE TRASH IDEA :smack:

All you need to do is grab one of the larger 17mm bellhousing bolt and screw it back into the engine block. I use the drivers side 9 o'clock location. Then get either a large screw driver or a pry bar and wedge it between the bolt and two teeth on the flywheel. Then as you try to loosen the flywheel, it won't be able to roate unless the prybar moves, so just hold on to it with your other hand. Very simple.

Of course you could also go down to your local Sears and buy a proper Craftsman tool that has two hooks (one swing arm) that is designed to hook onto the teeth of the flywheel and you just hold onto the special flywheel tool.

Good luck

Weld a cable to it and to a bumper of a different truck and do a burn out. Or just connect it to a door and slam the door. Ouch

6" long 3/8s drive extension wrapped in electrical tape, grease and a hammer.  I just fill the cavity behind the pilot bearing with grease and shove the extension intot he cavity and hammer on it till the grease pushes the bearing out.  Hydraulic pressure is a wonderfull thing sometimes...

Yep, that grease trick worked like a charm!  I used one of the 17mm crossmember bolts (read that in another thread).

Your chain on the flywheel idea also worked like a charm!  Thankya! Those flywheel bolts were on so tight that I broke a 17mm (Craftsman) socket on the first attempt.  Took off a chunk of my knuckle as well.  I had to use a Husky 17mm socket, a long handled torque wrench, two feet on the frame, two hands on the torque wrench and gave it the ol yee haw!!!  Unbelievable!

See my hillbilly ways work just fine with no fancy dancy crap needed at all.  I do everything on my junk with the tools that I carry on the trils so I figure out what works where so I dont have to carry a whole damned tool section from seers in the bed. ;)

I can't believe they've never heard about that!  you can also use wet paper towels instead of grease...really anything thick and wet like that.

belive it or not the greesy idea is in the chiltin er how ever you spell it. first time i tride it it took a LOONNG time. but i put the electrical tape like you said and i popped right out.
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

Any 20-22R head bolt works great.
It is the perfect size and long enough so you can get a good hit on it.
